Howard Leslie Obituary

Sep 01, 2016 - Oct 01, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
Howard E. Leslie 1932 - 2016 Howard E. Leslie was born on Sept. 28, 1932, and passed away peacefully, on Oct. 16, 2016, at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in Union Grove, Wis. However, a person's life is so much more than the time they spend on earth. Life is about how you live and the lives you touch. In his life time, Howard will always be remembered by those he taught, loved and cared for. Howard graduated from Ontonagon High School (Michigan) in 1950. In 1952 Howard was drafted and sent to Korea where he served in the U.S. Army 7th Infantry Division; he was honorably discharged in 1954. Upon his return to the United States he attended Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Mich. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1958. He received his Master's degree from Eastern Michigan University in 1965. On Dec. 20, 1958, he married Kay Renbarger and they began their married life in Algonac, Mich., where Howard taught high school and coached football, basketball, and track. Together they had three children, Kevin (Kris) Leslie of Kenosha, Kent Leslie of Ontonagon, Mich., and Keri (Jim) Bieniek of Chaska, Minn. In 1966 Howard began teaching at Gateway Technical College (then called Kenosha Technical Institute). Aside from teaching, Howard was instrumental in getting the school accredited and implementing both the Adult High School and GED programs. Howard also assisted in developing the Night School program, also at Gateway. During his long, teaching career, Howard crossed paths with many people. Whether out with his family in Kenosha, or even out of the area on vacation, Howard always seemed to run into one or more of his former students. In 2000, Howard retired from teaching after 42 years. He spent his retirement reading, traveling, and watching his beloved Detroit Lions and University of Michigan teams, play football. But most importantly Howard enjoyed time with his family, especially teaching his grandchildren the game of cribbage. Along with his wife and children, Howard is survived by his grandchildren, Miriam Leslie, Michael (Danielle) Leslie, Andrew Leslie, Lauren Leslie, Caitlin Bieniek, and Sydney Bieniek. He is also survived by his sister Virginia (Tom) Hamilton; sister-in-law Betty Renbarger; two great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Preceding Howard in Heaven are his parents, Ted and Lois Lesli; his brother Homer Leslie; sister-in-law Mary Ellen Leslie; father and mother-in-law Vachel and Dorothy Renbarger; and brother-in-law Bill Renbarger. The family would like extend a thank you to the many staff members at the Wisconsin Veterans Home, who did a wonderful job taking care of Howard in his final years. The Leslie Family will receive family and friends from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at Kenosha Funeral Services. In lieu of flowers, memorial remembrances may be made out to the family, which will be used to purchase a memorial brick at Gateway's garden, as well as a donation to the college.
