Helen B. Work Obituary

Dec 08, 1924 - Jan 14, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
Helen B. (Case) (Dunham) Work, age 91, of Brookville, PA, passed away on Friday, October 14, 2016, as a patient of Penn Highlands Brookville Hospital, in the presence of her loving family. She was born on December 8, 1924, in Pine Creek Township, Jefferson County, to the late Herbert J. and Clara A. (Gould) Case. Helen's beautiful life story includes a special path that could be used as a plot of a bestselling love story. Originally she was engaged to Homer E. Work; Homer joined the military and asked Helen to continue her life while he was gone. She fell in love with Frank M. Dunham and they were married in Big Run, PA, on September 13, 1944. After 33 years of hard work and life building, Frank passed away on September 1, 1977. Years later, she was attending her granddaughter's talent show where she was playing the fiddle; serendipitously she reconnected with Homer during the program, and on July 20, 1985, they were married in Brookville. Together Helen and Homer combined their families, completing a lifelong story and continuing forward together for 16 more years, until Homer passed away on October 14, 2001. Helen started her working life as a counter server at the Dixie Diner from 1942– 1944. When she and Frank were married she started her journey as a care giver; not only for her own family. She cared for many people personally in their homes, as well as babysitting and providing selfless service for her family and friends. After Frank's passing in 1977, she went to work for Wes King at the American Hotel Interchange. She stayed there until she retired in 1984, just prior to marrying Homer. Helen was a Christian woman with great faith and a willingness to serve others. Throughout her life she was active in and attended many churches including the Bethel Independent Church, the Christian Missionary Alliance Church, Lake City Methodist Church, and the Kirkman Independent Baptist Church. Some activities where she gave of her time and talents include volunteering to help with children as a Child Evangelism Volunteer, teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and actively participating in the Richardsville Women's Christian Temperance Union. She liked Blue Grass Music and she loved Daniel O'Donnell; she attended two of his concerts. She did not quilt, but she liked to embroider, and much of her work was used as quilt tops. She worked alongside Frank, attending to their farm and family, she loved to whistle while she worked. She traveled to many places and states. She and Homer loved their pets, especially dogs, went coon hunting, loved to go to auctions, and traveled to many local attractions such as the Tom Mix Museum. She definitely made the most of her 91 years. Helen is survived by 3 daughters; Lucy Palmer, Lillian (Larry) Mills, Kathryn (Donald) Suhan; 2 sons; William (Tammy) Dunham, Charles (Janet) Dunham; 2 step-sons; Earl (Kathy) Work, Robert (Patricia) Work; 2 brothers-in-law; Emerson Himes, Herbert (Norma) Work; 2 sisters-in-law; Emma Work, Janet Work; 5 granddaughters; Ann Palmer Austin, Tammy D.
