Gil was born on June 16, 1924 in Hudson, NY, the son of Margaret Rothe Avery and Gilbert Hanford Avery, Sr.Gil leaves two daughters, Susan Avery Finnern (Mike) and Patricia Avery Morris (Eli) and a son, James Gilbert Avery (Karen), as well as his loving longtime companion, Winnie Rials. He joins his beloved daughter, Joan Avery Lipsey (Tom) who passed away on February 16, 2017 and an infant son, Thomas Henry Avery. He also leaves 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren whom he adored. He, likewise, joins his sisters, Ruth Koepp (Kenny) and Blanche Zietz (Monroe).After short moves to Lima, OH where his oldest children were born and Shreveport, LA, he settled in Memphis, TN in 1955 with his wife, Jean Lindsay Avery (deceased 2014) and his young family.Gil founded G.H. Avery Co. soon after settling in Memphis as a manufacturer's representative/consulting engineer for Barber Coleman Co. Designing heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems for buildings in much of Metropolitan Memphis such as Clark Tower, St. Francis Hospital, the University of Memphis, the Justice Complex in downtown Memphis, and Christ United Methodist Church. His expertise in his field of air conditioning and heating engineering was noticed, and he was ultimately sought worldwide for consultation for energy savings involving large university and military base applications. He, likewise, lectured and was a leader in his field. He has long been highly respected and loved for his sharp wit, as well as his wealth of knowledge and acumen for innovation in the field of heating, ventilation and air conditioning engineering. He will always be admired for his selfless ability to share the latest information relating to the science upon which he thrived and which he loved. Gil also held several patents for inventions in his field. He was also an instrument rated pilot flying his own F33A Bonanza throughout the continental United States.This Renaissance Man lived a long and productive life as his unique love for his family stands out and will always be remembered. Gil's Family extends special appreciation to Dr. Kurt Tauer at West Cancer Clinic for his superior care.Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 20 at 12 noon at Christ United Methodist Church, with a memorial service at 1 p.m. in the Wilson Chapel. In lieu of flowers, dontations can be sent to the , West Clinic, or the .
