Gilbert Dean Duncan, 78, passed away Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008. Gib was born on Jan. 4, 1930, in Neponset, Ill., son of John Duncan and Bessie Beulah Gilbert Duncan. Gilbert grew up in Croton, Ohio, and graduated from Hartford High School, where he was active in all sports. After graduation, Gilbert joined the Air Force and served as a Control Tower Operator at Hill Air Force Base, where he met Ann Mae Claypool. They were married Oct. 2, 1950, in Elko, Nev. After Gilbert was honorably discharged from the service, they moved to Smithfield to make their home. Gilbert worked for 30 years as a physical plant supervisor at Utah State University. Gilbert and Ann Mae were blessed with three children: John, Ada and Cathy. Gib joined the LDS Church in 1966. Gib and Ann Mae were sealed in the Ogden LDS Temple in January 1978. Gib served in many positions in the LDS Church, including as high councilor and bishop. He especially enjoyed working with the youth. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ann Mae; and his children, John and Nancy Duncan and Cathy and Kendal Merrill. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Amanda and James, Jake and Misty, Ashley and Adam, Danya and Christian, Linsey and Troy, Braden and Savannah, Shay, and Kaylee; and nine great-grandchildren. Gilbert's grandchildren were the light of his life. He never missed going to any of their sports events or activities. He made many wonderful memories with them. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Helen Duncan and Marjorie Bone; his precious daughter, Ada Dean; and three grandchildren. Our family would like to give thanks for the loving, gentle care shown to Gib by the staff of Wing 5 at Sunshine Terrace. We also appreciate the help and concern shown to us during the last months by Jan, Royella and Katie from Legacy Home Care. Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, in the Smithfield 1st Ward Chapel, 175 S. 100 West. There will be a viewing Tuesday evening from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home, 85 South Main, Smithfield and prior to the services Wednesday morning from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Smithfield 1st Ward Building. Interment will be in the Smithfield City Cemetery. Condolences may be extended to the family online at www.nelsonfuneralhome.com.
