Frances Mercurio Obituary

Nov 13, 1928 - Feb 22, 2019

This obituary is administered by:

Frances "Fran" Joan Mercurio, 90,of Monterey, CA  passed away February 22, 2019 after a short battle with glioblastoma multiforme.

Frances was born to Horace and Alice Bruno, November 13th, 1928 in Monterey, CA. She met her childhood sweetheart, Dominick Mercurio, when she was just 14 and they married in 1949 after he arrived home from WWII. The couple moved to Oxnard, CA. Together they raised two children.

She leaves as her legacy the following family members in whom she took great joy: Her children - Donna Sassen (Danny) and Shell Mercurio (Paul Shantic); Her five grandchildren - Tina Hecteman (Kevin), Francine McGrew (John), Peter Sassen (Suzanne ), Melodie Nagelschmidt, and Dominick Bernal (Alison); 9 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and three siblings. Her family will remember her as a social butterfly with a feisty streak who loved to be around her family.

She was preceded in death by Alice and Horace Bruno (parents), Dominick Mercurio (her loving husband) and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Fran was a Food Service Supervisor for the Oxnard School District until she retired in 1983 and was passionate about providing a nourishing meal so no child ever went hungry. She loved to cook and knit (especially baby blankets). Fran could always be counted on to help coordinate social functions in her younger retirement years. Fran and Dominick were frequently in charge of events at Country Estates Mobile Home Park in Ventura, CA. Even as a resident at Heron Place Senior Living (Nampa, ID), Fran was often seen "coordinating" the social events and hanging out with her friends lovingly nicknamed, The Golden Girls.

A small memorial and reception is scheduled for March 10th, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at Heron Place Senior Living in Nampa, ID.  The family would also like to give prolific thanks to the staff of Heron Place and Horizon Hospice, especially the nursing staff who treated Fran like family and with dignity in her final days.

She will be missed and remembered fondly.
