This obituary is administered by:

LAURINBURG — Elizabeth "Betsy" Newton Hein, 59, passed away April 11, 2015 at their family home on Lake Oconee.

Betsy was born on Jan. 28, 1956, in Crockett, Texas. She is survived by her husband, Scott; her four sons, Tyler and his wife Colleen, Andrew, and twins Alex and Jamie Hein; her mother, Elizabeth Purcell Newton; her brother, Jim, and wife Lynne Newton; her sister, Tina, and husband Richie Harwood; three nephews and three nieces. She was a granddaughter of Gus and Anna Meta Buchanan Purcell.

Betsy will be remembered for the positive influence she had upon others. She grew up in Sandy Springs, Georgia where she attended Ridgeview High School. She graduated from Valdosta State University with a degree in nursing, working many years in the medical field. Betsy later pursued her dream of teaching, earning her degree at Kennesaw State University. For more than a decade, she taught both elementary grades and special education classes, eventually becoming a reading specialist in education, which was truly symbolic of her loving nature and heartfelt desire to help all those she could.

Betsy had a passion for designing and decorating. A hot glue gun was never far from her reach. She always had a project underway wherever she lived, making her house a beautiful and welcoming home to all. She loved to entertain for every occasion, especially SEC football games. Betsy will also be remembered for her unparalleled generosity, the charisma she brought to conversations, and of course, her love for Godiva Chocolate and Nordstrom!

A family graveside service will be held Friday at Hillside Cemetery in Laurinburg, followed by a worship service at the Laurinburg Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m.

McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium is serving the family.
