CHARLOTTE | Dorothy W. Starnes, age 97, a long-time resident of Charlotte, NC, passed away on September 27, 2016. She was born one of 12 children on June 29, 1919, to the late Millis Young Wright and Velma Mehaffey Wright in Canton, NC. Dorothy "Dot" worked as a waitress for over 40 years for New China (downtown Charlotte), Nixon Bros. Steakhouse, Heart of Charlotte and Oriental Restaurant. She had a passion for cooking, clipping coupons, yard sales and watching Atlanta Braves baseball and Tar Heel basketball. Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Marshall C. Starnes.She is survived by her daughters, Gwen W. Gilder of Charlotte, NC, Lana S. Warlick (Robert) of Jacksonville, NC and Myra S. Pendry of Stallings, NC; three grandchildren, Warren Gilder (Candy), Jason Pendry (Christy) and Jessica P. Dunham (Aaron); ten great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two great-great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.A graveside service will be held at two o'clock in the afternoon on Thursday, the 29th of September, 2016, at Sunset Memory Gardens.
