Doris G. Spence, 86, of Indiantown, Fla., passed away on Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at Martin Memorial Hospital South in Stuart, Fla., with her son, William, daughter-in-law, Margaret, and caregiver, Debra Campbell, at her side. Doris was born on November 21, 1929 to Elwood and Mary Gauger in Pittston and spent her childhood in West Pittston. She graduated from West Pittston High School. She received a B.S. degree in Biology at Wilkes College in Wilkes Barre, and an M.S. degree in Education from Marywood College in Scranton.She was a dedicated educator and had a successful career as a teacher beginning in Ridgely, MD. and retired from Montrose Area School District. She touched the lives of many students throughout the years and inspired her students to use what they learned in the classroom to better understand the world around them. She was a prolific reader and an accomplished organist and pianist who directed multiple vocal groups including the Indianwood Chorus. Doris was married to her husband, Billie James Spence, for 51 years before he passed. They had moved to Florida to enjoy the sunshine and all the activities offered in her new home. As a 25-year resident of her Indianwood Golf and Country Club community in Indiantown, Fla., Doris was involved in tennis, golf, bocce, and bowling as well as other organized activities. Doris was a master bridge player and also enjoyed playing mahjongg with her friends. She was previously the President of the Indianwood Golf Course Ladies Golf League. Doris is survived by her three sons, William (Margaret) Spence of Boca Raton, Fla.; David (Karen) Spence and grandchildren, David Lee, Christopher, and Brianna of Montrose; and Terry (Susan) Spence and grandchildren, Aaron James and Caroline Rose of Colorado Springs, Colo.; as well as many nephews, nieces, and cousins in Pennsylvania, New York and Florida.She is predeceased by her brother, Warren (Gloria) Gauger of West Pittston. Funeral services were held at Martin Funeral Home and Crematory, 961 S. Kanner Highway in Stuart, Fla., on Tuesday, December 1, 2015. Visitation was held prior to the service. She will then be laid to rest at Greensboro Cemetery in Greensboro, Md. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the , P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA. 22312.
