Harder, Donald "Pat"Donald "Pat" Harder, formerly of Menasha, passed away on Thursday, November 10, 2016, at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King. He was born on May 29, 1935 in Potter, Wisconsin to the late Reinard and Viola (Fink) Harder. Pat attended grade school and was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brillion. He attended Brillion High School and while there, enjoyed music and competed in both solo and ensemble. He also played bass drum in both high school and the city band, and was co-editor of school newspaper and manager for the baseball and basketball teams. He graduated on May 29, 1953 on his 18th birthday. After a one year waiting period, he attended Barber School at the Green Bay Technical School. He then started his apprenticeship training in Oshkosh. After three months he enlisted for two years in the U.S. Army. He received his basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and advanced training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He was then stationed in Karlsruhe, Germany for 14 months. While there he was able to visit several countries throughout Europe. Upon returning to the United States he was honorably discharged from active duty and served four years in the Army Reserves. He then completed his apprenticeship at Pete's Barber Shop in Brillion. In June of 1958 he worked in a shop in Menasha and on January 1, 1959 he acquired the ownership and started his own business: Harder's Barber Shop, which he operated for 38 years. He then worked at Captain's Korner Barber Shop for 14 years before retiring.In March of 1960, he joined the Menasha Lions Club, was elected Secretary-Treasurer and held the office for 52 years. He was very active on both the club and district level. He transported many sets of eyes to the Wisconsin Lions Eye Bank in Milwaukee that were donated through Theda Clark Hospital. He was District Chairman of several different committees on the cabinets of 23 District Governors while serving as Chairman of the Lions Youth Exchange Program; he coordinated the first exchange in District 27B1by obtaining 3 host families for a student from Finland to spend the summer in Appleton, Neenah and Princeton. The following year he arranged for a student from Appleton to go to Finland.Pat was bowling league secretary for many years, secretary-treasurer of the Neenah-Menasha Bowling Association and was elected to their Hall of Fame. Pat was a big sports fan of the Packers, Wisconsin Badgers, UW-Oshkosh and Lawrence University men's and women's basketball and football teams. At one time he was the proud owner of eight Packer season tickets. Pat enjoyed doing public address announcing as a hobby. He was the voice of the Menasha High School Blue Jay basketball, football and wrestling for 23 years. He did the announcing for the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Girls High School All Star games for 12 years at the UW Oshkosh Fieldhouse, 2 years at the UW Fieldhouse and 1 year at the Kohl Center in Madison. He also did the announcing for the Harrison Athletic Association's Women's Softball League and HAA Tournaments. Pat enjoying making people laugh and always had a joke or humorous story to tell. He enjoyed making and sending his home-made Christmas and greeting cards to his friends and relatives. For health reasons, in February 2011, he applied and was accepted to live at the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King.He is survived by many cousins, relatives, numerous friends and special friend and love of his life: Jan Johnson of Kaukauna. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister: Audrey Harder of Milwaukee; Visitation for "Pat" will be at Wichmann Funeral Home - Tri County Chapel, 1592 Oneida Street in Menasha, on Monday, November 14 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 300 Broad Street in Menasha on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at 11:00 AM. There will be visitation at the church on Tuesday from 9:00 AM until the time of the service. At a later date, Pat will be cremated and laid to rest in "God's little Acre" Cemetery - St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Chilton Township, where he had been baptized. In lieu of flowers, Pat asked that memorials be made to the Wisconsin Lions Camp for the visually handicapped.In closing, Pat would like to thank the entire staff at the Veteran's Home for their excellent care and treatment that made his stay at King as pleasant as possible.
