Don Harris, 90 of Wellsville, Kansas passed away Tuesday, September 26, 2023 at his home. Interment will commence at Wellsville Cemetery, Wellsville, Kansas, on Saturday, September 30, 2023 at 10:00 a.m., with military honors by the United States Army Honor Guard, Ft. Riley, Kansas. Don was born on Saturday, January 30, 1926 in Burlington, Kansas, the son of John William and Lydia (Roth) Harris. He grew up, attended school, and lived in Burlington for about twenty years. Following his military service, he lived in several places before moving to Wellsville in 1979. Don worked for Western Auto in Missouri for thirteen or fourteen years servicing appliances. He owned and operated the Feed Store in Wellsville from 1979 until his retirement in 1986. Don served from April 1944 to May 1946 in the United States Army during WWII, in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He later served in the Kansas National Guard until June 1959 with Company B, 174th MP Battalion as a squad leader, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He was a member of the Wellsville United Methodist Church, Aerie Lodge #309, Fraternal Order of Eagles in Lawrence, American Legion Post #194 in Wellsville, Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post #6397 of Garnett and the Lawrence OURS Dance Club (Oldsters United for Responsible Services). On February 10, 1944, Don was united in marriage with Mary Elizabeth Crouse in Emporia, Kansas. She preceded him in death February 13, 1988. On November 20, 1989, he married Ona Knight. He is survived by his devoted wife whom he loved dearly. Other survivors include his two daughters, Peggy Jones and husband Donald of Olathe, and Leesa Sands and husband Pat of Wellsville; three stepsons, Gary Knight of Gravois Mills, Missouri, Fred Knight of Wellsville, and Frank Knight and wife Judy of Spring Hill; nine grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren; three step grandchildren; and eight step great grandchildren; sister, Armenta Bell of Burlington. He is preceded in death by his 1st wife; parents; brothers, Alvin and Melvin Harris; sisters, Mabel Makepeace and Eunice Young.
