Dewdrop McDonald RuleKnoxville, TNRule, Dewdrop McDonald, age 95 of Knoxville, died peacefully Wednesday afternoon, May 3, 2017. She was born on March 5, 1922 in Tunica, Mississippi to the late A.D. and Ella Lela McDonald. Dewdrop grew up in Tunica County and graduated from Tunica County High School in 1939 where she lettered in basketball and received the D.A.R. Good Citizenship medal and Activities medal. Dewdrop attended the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) and earned a BS degree in 1942 under the new wartime acceleration program which allowed three semesters of work per year. At Ole Miss, she won medals in intramural sports: basketball, ping pong and badminton. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) came to Ole Miss campus, recruiting her for a job, she then moved to Knoxville following graduation. There she met her future husband, pre-med student, Kenneth Rule. After their marriage, they moved to Memphis, Tennessee until Kenneth's graduation from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, Memphis. In 1947, they returned to Knoxville and she resumed her work with TVA as the General Counsel's Secretary until 1951. Dewdrop was a charter member of The Episcopal Church of The Ascension, the Thrift Shop Board and taught Sunday School for several years. She was active in the Bearden PTA and a Girl Scout Leader. Dewdrop was a past president of the Knoxville Academy of Medicine Alliance, past president of Tennessee Medical Association Alliance (TMAA), and past president of International Training in Communication (Eastenn Toastmistress). She was a charter volunteer at Parkwest Medical Center for more than thirty-eight years, serving over 10,500 hours at the information desk. She received the Tennessee Hospital Association Meritorious (Volunteer) award in 2004 and the TMAA Dolores Chandra Excellence in Leadership award in 2010. Dewdrop was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth B. Rule, M.D.; sister, Lucille McDonald; and brother, Wayne McDonald, all of Tunica County, Mississippi. She is survived by her daughters, Cheryl Kent and Jill (Ken) Hartsfield of Memphis; son, Kenneth A. (Patra) Rule, M.D. of Knoxville. The family would like to give a special thanks to the wonderful staff at Little Creek Sanitarium for their care of Dewdrop.
