Destiny Ann Mathers Thornton, age 34, of North East, died peacefully on Thursday, October 20, 2016. She was born on June 8, 1982 in Erie to Karen Kishel Light of North East and the late James Bryon Mathers Jr. Destiny graduated from North East High School class of 2000 and earned a degree in Nursing from Mercyhurst North East. She was employed as a registered nurse at Abington Crest. Destiny loved caring for animals and people. She loved many other things including knitting blankets for family and friends, crafts, cooking, home construction projects, reading, and writing. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her grandfather, James Byron Mathers Sr. Destiny is survived by her husband of 13 years, Jesse Thornton of North East, whom she married on May 16, 2003; children, Braeden Thornton, 13 and Ashton Thornton, 10, of North East; parents, Michael and Karen Light of North East; siblings, Brittany Mathers of Millcreek, James Byron Mathers III of Pittsfield, Pa., Amber Mathers of North East, Haley Light of North East, Ashley Light of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; maternal grandparents, James and Elizabeth Kishel of Erie; paternal grandmother, Ruth Mathers of Harborcreek; many uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Friends are invited to attend a visitation to celebrate Destiny's Celebration of Life on Tuesday 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Greenfield Baptist Church, 9028 Williams Rd., North East.
