DAVID S. KING Obituary

Nov 24, 1946 - Nov 15, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
KING, DAVID, Professor of Law, Quinnipiac University David King, Professor of Law at Quinnipiac University School of Law, died on November 15, at the age of 69, in his home in Woodbridge, CT, following a long battle with cancer. David was born on November 24, 1946 in Cleveland, OH. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1968, and was soon drafted into the US Army. He served as a sergeant at the headquarters for the 18th Military Police Brigade in Vietnam from 1969-1971. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he returned to Cleveland to attend Cleveland State University School of Law where he was on the Board of Editors of the Law Review and graduated magna cum laude. He was admitted to the Ohio Bar in 1974, and worked as an attorney at the firm of Garber, Simon & Haiman in Cleveland. He then went on to obtain an LLM from Harvard Law School in 1977 and was admitted to the Massachusetts Bar. Professor King has been a faculty member of Quinnipiac, and its predecessor, the University of Bridgeport School of Law, since 1978, during which time he also served as Interim Dean and Associate Dean. Through his almost 40 years of service to these institutions, students and faculty alike regarded him as a highly respected teacher, scholar, and leader. He taught courses in property, land use and urban planning, as well as trusts and estates, and real estate. Professor King truly loved teaching law, and his passion for it and his students was clear to anyone who walked into his classroom. Professor King was also very active in his local community. He was a board member of the New Haven Legal Assistance Association, a volunteer hearing officer for the Bridgeport and Norwalk housing authorities, and a member of the editorial board of the Connecticut Law Tribune. He served as a member the municipal Board of Finance, and as Secretary of the Planning and Zoning Commission for the town of Woodbridge. He had also served in different leadership capacities on the Regional Planning Commission for South Central CT since 1998. In addition to teaching law, David had many other passions in his full life, including a love for cooking and entertaining his friends and family, running, skiing (which he picked up only about 10 years ago), classic rock, cars, the Cleveland Browns (the mention of which usually provoked a deep sigh), reading history, and visiting Oregon. Most importantly, he was exceptionally dedicated to his wife, Diane, his children Dan and Rachel, step-children Claire and Jenifer, his eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren, his golden retriever, and his tight group of lifelong friends. As a veteran of the Vietnam War, David has requested to be inurned at Arlington National Ceremony. A memorial service will be held at a future date at Quinnipiac School of Law. In lieu of flowers, he requested that donations be made in his memory to the New Haven Legal Assistance Association.
