Clifton H. BenderNaples, FLClifton H. Bender, 95, formerly of York, died on Sunday, October 4, 2015, with his daughter, Susan and son-in-law, John by his side. He was the husband of the late Nancy L. (Griffith) Bender who passed away on March 31, 2015. They had been married for 71 years.'Clif' was born on March 25, 1920, in Baltimore, Md., to the late Richard and Alice (Englund) Bender. He was a graduate of Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and attended courses at Johns Hopkins University. He was a United States Navy veteran of WWII.He was employed for 43 years as a Tool & Die Maker and later a Supervisor of Tool Maintenance for Western Electric and AT&T at their Baltimore works plant in Dundalk, Md. He was an avid golfer and a past president of the Point Breeze Golf Club. Clif and Nancy moved with their two young daughters to Perry Hall, Md. where he was a member of the Perry Hall Presbyterian Church and served as a deacon of the congregation. He became interested in boating and got his captain's license to enjoy the Chesapeake Bay on their boat "Carry On". He was an avid reader, whether it was current events, history or sports. Retirement brought the opportunity to travel which he thoroughly enjoyed.Clif was truly a 'lifelong learner". As recently as September, he was attending The Discovery University lecture series at Aston Gardens, Naples, Fla. His intellectual curiosity, his wit, his compassion for others and his caring for his family never diminished with age. Clif is survived by his daughter, Nancy 'Susan' Heard and her husband, John of Naples, Fla.; and his granddaughter, Lisa Dianne Bill and her husband, Ted of Naples, Fla. In addition to his parents and wife, Clif was preceded in death by his brother, Walter Bender; and his sister, Ruth Bender Wilkins; and by a daughter, Linda Dianne Aquilla.Following cremation, a memorial service will be held on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at 10 a.m. at the Etzweiler Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, 1111 E.
