Christine Spivey Obituary

Oct 31, 1932 - Aug 22, 2025

This obituary is administered by:

Christine Spivey, affectionately known as "Kitty," was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend whose life was a testament to love, faith, and service. She was born in Marydale, Mississippi, and was educated in the public schools there. In 1967, Christine and her family moved to Detroit, Michigan, where she became an active member of Greater Mt. Olivet and later, New Bride Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Eugene Guy and, subsequently, Rev. Gary Ayler. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she faithfully sang in the senior choir and served on the mother’s board, inspiring all with her spiritual devotion.

A warm and nurturing soul, Christine had an unmistakable presence. She was known for her kind words, her radiant smile, and her unwavering compassion. Her love for her family and community was evident in her daily acts of kindness—feeding the homeless every weekend, running a thrift store, and shopping in Hamtramck on Sundays for clothes to prepare for the upcoming week. She found joy in simple pleasures like cooking her famous banana pudding and discovering treasures in thrift stores. Reading her daily word kept her spiritually nourished and guided her through life’s challenges.

Christine shared 64 years of marriage with her beloved husband, S.C. Spivey, a partnership built on mutual devotion and care. She was a dedicated mother to eleven children: Jerry Mitchell (Linda), Linda Watkins (Kenneth), Casandra Harris (the late Johnnie Harris), Kennedy Spivey, Kenneth Spivey, Anthony Spivey (Jennifer), Stacy Spivey, Darlene Gilbert (Gerald), Cathy Benford, and the late Lawanda Collins and Christopher Spivey. Her love for her children knew no bounds; she checked on each of them every morning and, even in her final hours, called each by name, offering peace and love to her children and those who had gone before her.

Her legacy continues through her 36 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren, all of whom carry forward the values she instilled of love, faith, and service. She also held a special place in her heart for her godson, Thomas Rush Jr., affectionately known as June. Christine's family extended to nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, and a host of children she loved as her own, along with her church family who were an extension of her own.

Christine’s life was marked by simple joys and profound acts of kindness. She enjoyed shopping for treasures, cooking for loved ones, and reading her daily word for spiritual inspiration. Her gentle strength and unwavering faith touched everyone she encountered.

Christine peacefully departed this life on May 17, 2025, at Henry Ford Hospital in Warren, Michigan, at the age of 91. Her final wish was to see all her children once more, a wish fulfilled just before her passing. Surrounded by love, she left this world with grace and serenity, at peace knowing her legacy of love and faith would endure.

Christine "Kitty" Spivey leaves to cherish her memory: her children Jerry Mitchell (Linda), Linda Watkins (Kenneth), Casandra Harris (the late Johnnie Harris), Kennedy Spivey, Kenneth Spivey, Anthony Spivey (Jennifer), Stacy Spivey, Darlene Gilbert (Gerald), Cathy Benford; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her godson Thomas Rush Jr.; her sister, the late Lula Vivens; her grandchildren Conda Brantley and Herman Vilvens; her nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law Claudia Lee and Warnetta Sharp, and many other loved ones, friends, and her church family.

Christine's life was a beautiful journey of love, faith, and service. Her memory will forever inspire all who knew her. May she rest in eternal peace.
