Frankel, Charles Charles Frankel, 94, passed away on February 3, 2017 in Surprise, AZ. He was born on September 2, 1922 in New York, NY to Nathan and Jennie Frankel. Charles grew up in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. He attended Seward Park High School, but left at age 17 for fulltime work at the 1939-40 New York World's Fair. In 1940 he enlisted in the Marine Corps and fought in the First Marine Division at Guadalcanal. In the Marine Corps, Frankel received his high school diploma via GED. Charles married Adele Farber in 1948, and they were happily married for 68 years. After two tours of duty in the Marines, Frankel joined the New York City Police Department. During his time in the NYPD, he attended City University of New York. He rose through the ranks of the NYPD and was promoted to Lieutenant in 1968. Frankel retired from the department in 1975 and moved to Sun City West, Arizona in 1978 as one of the first 50 residents of the new development. In 1984, Charles joined the Sun City West Fire Department. In 1986, Frankel volunteered with the American Red Cross, and was named Chairman of the Disaster Committee. Frankel spent the next 14 years aiding residents across the USA in times of floods, earthquakes and other disasters. In 1990 Frankel was elected to the Sun City West Fire Board, and in 2000 became Chairman of the Fire Board. He remained Chairman of the Board until 2006, and remained on the board until his retirement in 2008. Charles Frankel is survived by his wife Adele of Surprise, AZ; his son Robert of Woodbridge, NJ; his daughter Shari of Stony Brook, NY; his grandson Jason Frankel and granddaughter Alyssa Frankel; and his nieces and nephews and other relatives. His parents, Jennie and Nathan, his brother David, and his sister Rae preceded Charles in death. Charles Frankel has requested that there be no funeral service. He will be cremated and his ashes will be placed at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix, AZ.
