Dan Berkowitz

I first met Chuck Doswell in 1980, when he was in the Severe Local Storms (SELS) Techniques Development Unit (TDU) of National Severe Storms Forecast Center (NSSFC), now called the Storm Prediction Center (SPC). He and his coworker Les Lemon had a great positive influence on how NWS forecasters view severe thunderstorms, which led to a major but much needed update to radar training at the NWS Training Center, mainly done by Dennis Lowden, in the 1980s. He and Al Moller (a forecaster from the Fort Worth NWS Forecast Office) were pioneers in scientific tornadic storm chasing. He collaborated with Bob Maddox to teach the mesoscale analysis portion of the Flash Flood Forecasting Course at the NWS Training Center in Kansas City. He was proud of calling himself a curmudgeon, criticizing what he saw as poor politics and poor meteorology. As others have said here, he had a great influence on the careers and research of many meteorologists. Chuck, I thank you for your contributions to my own career.
