Barbara Hall-BellowsDecember 20, 1950November 24, 2016Barbara Louise Hall-Bellows passed away at Renown Regional Medical Center on November 24, 2016, after a long battle with
breast cancer.Barbara was born in Santa Monica, California on December 20, 1950 and grew up in Northridge, where she attended James Monroe High School and UC/Northridge. While on a family trip in her teens, she passed through Reno, and was so enamored by the beauty of the area, made up her mind to one day live there. So, in 1977, she and her first husband, Bob Hall, moved to Washoe Valley. They had a son, Matthew, born on October 15, 1979. In 1978, Barbara landed a job at the University of Nevada, Reno that ended up becoming her career. She worked in the Financial Aid office for the next thirty years, helping thousands of kids achieve their dreams. To say she was passionate about her work would be an understatement. Many times she worked on "special problems" at home after hours and on weekends. In the last months of her life, every visit to Renown was like "old home week", where doctors and nurses she had provided aid to in the eighties and nineties remembered her and thanked her for the assistance she provided, and she reveled in that. That was her reward for a life well spent. In 2015, she received a Long Time Membership award from the Nevada Association of Financial Aid Administrators. She met her second husband, Bert Bellows, in 1981 while working as the Veteran's Coordinator, assisting students attending college on the GI Bill. They were married in Virginia City on September 21, 1985 and on January 10, 1987, were blessed with the arrival of identical twin daughters, Sarah and Hannah. As her husband pursued a career in the mining industry, Barbara worked eight-to-five and raised the three kids primarily on her own. She was an amazing "Type A" personality. She always put everyone else first. With her financial savvy, she was able to put together the funds to purchase a property in Graeagle, California, which became the family's weekend retreat, and was shared by many family and friends. Barbara was pre-deceased by her brother, Russ Zane of Reno, and her parents, Joyce and Emil Zane of Sparks. She is survived by her sister, Bernadette of West Hills, California, and her brother-in-law, Scott DeYoung, her ex-husband Bob Hall of Washoe Valley, her son Matthew Hall of Sparks, his partner Gretchen and granddaughters Tegan and Dylan, husband Bert of Sparks, daughters Hannah and Sarah, also of Sparks, and her nephews Josh and Dustin DeYoung of the LA area. It was Tegan who first referred to Barbara as "MattMom", and it stuck. For the last years of her life, most of us called her that, except for her former co-workers in the Financial Aid office, who always referred to her, simply, as "BHB".One of Barbara's many passions was her service to students of the University of Nevada, and local high schools. In lieu of flowers, Barbara's family encourages you to consider making a donation in her memory to the Barbara Hall- Bellows Memorial Scholarship fund, at 448 Hill St. Reno, NV 89501. The funds will be awarded to a worthy UNR or local student, to help pursue their dreams.
