ROCKINGHAM, N.C. — Ashby Dunn Scott, 78, of Rockingham, passed away at Richmond County Hospice Haven on Friday, July 22, 2016. Ashby was born on April 5, 1938 in Richmond, Virginia, to Maria Ashby Moncure and Richard McIlwaine Dunn.

After graduating from Converse College in 1960 with a bachelor of arts in elementary education, she married Legrand Thurman Scott, who preceded her in death in 2015.

She is survived by two daughters, Mardi Scott Smith of Columbia, South Carolina, and Jane Scruggs of Pinehurst, North Carolina. Mrs. Scott was "Nana" to five grandchildren, Mariah Smith Buyers (Johnathan Buyers), Chelsea Smith (Brandon Beverly), Charles Scruggs, Legrand Scruggs and Ashby Scruggs. Additionally she had two great-grandchildren, Kinsley and John Beverly. She is also survived by a two sister-in-laws, Wilton Sadler of Richmond, Virginia, and Gerri Moore of Columbia, South Carolina; three nieces, Christie Dudley of Richmond, Virginia, Debbie Carlin of Irvine, California, Beth Fisher of Little Mountain, South Carolina; and a nephew, Richard Dunn of Richmond, Virginia.

Mrs. Scott was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church of Rockingham. She dedicated her life to her family and fought a long and courageous battle with multiple sclerosis. Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday in the mausoleum at Richmond County Memorial Park.
