BELOIT - Annie Harrell, 103, of Beloit, WI, died Saturday, November 22, 2014 at Ridgewood Care Center in Racine, WI. Annie was born on April 11, 1911 in Pontotoc, MS, the daughter of John and Margaret McGlaun a family of sharecroppers which included 16 children. Annie attended Pontotoc High School finishing 8th grade, but was unable to continue due to her family's need of her services working in the fields. Annie married James Marcellis Harrell on June 26, 1937. To this union was born two sons, James Harrell Jr, and Johnny B. Harrell. In 1942 the family left sharecropping behind to move to Beloit briefly living in the now historic Fairbanks-Morse Flats Apartment. Annie lost her husband in 1955 and had to raise her two sons alone. She worked most of her life. First, at Lock-Joint in Rockford, IL, then at a canning factory in Janesville, WI and for the last 30 years as a presser at American Cleaners in Beloit. Annie was a faithful and active member of New Zion Baptist Church in Church. It was her strength and her life. At 103 she is one of the oldest members of the church where she served, and sang in the choir until she became unable to due her declining health. She spent 72 years in Beloit enjoying her family and friends. In 2010, Annie moved to Racine to live with her son, Johnny and his wife, Carolyn. She later moved into Ridgewood Care Center where she passed. Annie's hobbies were sewing, canning, gardening, fishing, singing, and playing cards. She loved to make quilts for her friends and family. She also sold some of her quilts in Beloit and Madison, WI. Annie leaves to cherish her memory a son, Johnny (Carolyn) Harrell of Racine, seven grandchildren, Johnny (Shirley) Harrell, Terry Thomas, Connie Fisher all of Racine, Kenneth (Lisa) Harrell of Russellville, AL, Carrie Paton of Beloit, Shirl Ann Pennaily of Memphis, TN, Marcus James Harrell of Rockford, IL, twelve great-grandchildren, thirteen great-great-grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, and her fifteen brothers and sisters. Funeral services are 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 1, 2014 at New Zion Baptist Church 1905 Mound Ave in Beloit with Reverend James Ivy officiating. Visitation will be one prior to the service at the church. Committal will be in Eastlawn Cemetery in Beloit.
