Alicia's great-grandparents, Joseph Gibson Morris and Electa Stowell Morris travelled to California by wagon train from Lamar County, Texas. Joseph and Electa arrived in El Monte, California in 1853. Alicia's grandfather, Henry Clay Fowler married her grandmother, Sarah Joseph Morris Fowler and settled in Napa, California. Alicia attended grammar school in Betteravia and Guadalupe and graduated from Santa Maria High School in 1936. She married Bill Scott a few years after graduation and had two sons, Wayne Scott and Ronald Scott. After a divorce, she moved to Ventura. Having had clothing store experience, she worked at clothing stores in downtown Ventura including "Jan's Dress Shop' run by Phil Zebker. She was introduced to Arthur W. Chaffee and they married in 1952 in Las Vegas, Nevada. They were married for 57 years. Soon after they were married, they had a son, Terry W. Chaffee. After her marriage, she moved to live on the Chaffee Ranch in Oxnard. She loved gardening and was especially proud of the roses she grew at the ranch along with the special rocks they brought from the Piru area. When she and Art moved to Ojai in the early 1970's she planted and tended her new garden there, too. Her love of gardening lasted throughout her life. Alicia was an athlete in a time when most women were not. Alicia took up roller skating at age 40 when her son started taking lessons. The Chaffee family had many enthusiastic tennis players and Alicia learned how to play tennis at age 50. Tennis became her passion for the rest of her life. She loved tennis and began playing on local tennis teams and in tournaments. She was a charter member of the Ojai Valley Raquet Club and was a member of the Ojai Valley Inn Tennis Club. She played tennis until the age of 93 when she broke her hip after a fall on the tennis court. Alicia enjoyed the tennis opportunities in Ojai. For more than 30 years, she enjoyed volunteering at the Ojai Open to serve juice, tea and cookies. In addition to tennis and gardening, Alicia loved baking. She made great cheesecakes & strawberry rhubarb pies but was especially known for her lemon meringue pies. At a fundraising auction, one pie sold for $200! Alicia was known as an impeccably dressed woman. She loved getting all dressed up and particularly enjoyed belonging to a dance group in Ventura with her husband, Art. In later years she enjoyed 'Dancing with the Stars'. Besides 'Dancing with the Stars', Alicia enjoyed 'Wheel of Fortune' and 'Jeopardy' but her favorite was always the 'Lawrence Welk Show'. When she moved to Carlsbad she was surprised by a trip for lunch at Lawrence Welk Resort in Escondido. For her it was like going to Disneyland. Alicia had many interests. She enjoyed genealogy and discovering her family's roots. She was a member of the Republican Women's Association and Christian Women's Association and attended church in Ojai.
