Albert D. MartinOn the morning of November 28, 2016, Albert passed away peacefully in his hometown of South San Francisco, comforted by his wife of 49 years, Diane. Al was born on June 8, 1926, the youngest child of Antonio and Maria Martins.A happy childhood, Al enjoyed many favorite pastimes including high school basketball. He also worked weekends to save money so that he could drive his Model A to dances on the weekends. Al, graduated early to join the US Navy during WWII. As a ship's carpenter on the USS KENT, he fought in significant battles around the globe and his ship later became a medical transport for wounded soldiers.After WWII, Al pursued his lifelong profession and passion of carpentry. He remodeled and built many homes in and around South San Francisco and took much pride in his work. As an aging bachelor, Al was a frequent dinner guest at many friends' homes. Though no longer a sailor, Al continued his love of boating and built a boat called the Coco Bum!In 1967, Al married Diane (Venturi) Davino who had two small boys, Michael and Jeffrey that he raised as his own. In 1968, they had a son together, David. Summers were spent boating and waterskiing at various lakes and winters included trips with the Lovi's to Tahoe. Soon, his love/hate relationship with golf began. He treasured his time with his golf buddies, perfecting his swing and shooting the breeze. Al was active in many organizations and clubs: SSF Chamber of commerce (President), South San Francisco PAL Board of Directors and dinner dance chairman, YMI, The Italian American Social Club, SSF Elks Lodge Charter Member, Peninsula Builders Exchange (President) and drummer in the Over the Hill Gang (Conquistadors). Al was proud to be Portuguese and a member of the Santo Cristo Society, he worked tirelessly in various capacities over the years, including President. Al is preceded in death by his parents, Antonio and Maria Martins; brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Marie Martin; and son Michael Davino. Al is survived by his wife, Diane; sister, Evelyn Martin; sons Jeffrey Davino (Sonia) and David Martin (Nicole); daughter-in-law, Corinne Davino and grandchildren Meghan and Jason Davino.Thank you to Sutter Care at Home for their diligent and gentle care of Al during his final days. And special thanks to Dr. Brad Angeja, Dr. David Karam, and Dr. Robert Jasmer.Friends may visit between 5pm-8pm Thurs., Dec. 1st Garden Chapel, 885 El Camino Real, So.SF where a Vigil Service will be held at 7pm. Mass of Resurrection will be offered at 10am, Fri., Dec. 2nd All Souls Church, corner of Walnut and Miller Avenues, So.SF. Committal Holy Cross Cemetery.
