Zenobia LaDage Obituary

Mar 27, 1915 - Nov 25, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
Zenobia Anderson LaDageZenobia Anderson LaDage, beloved wife, mother, daughter, cousin, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend to so many, passed away peacefully on November 25th at the age of 101. She had the most remarkable life of faith and service to others… always offering her wise wisdom and counsel along with her sweet smile, twinkling eyes, and a mindset in which her cup was always overflowing. She was born on March 27, 1915, in Waverly, Iowa, the only child to the late Hartzell Vincent Anderson and Luella Elizabeth Briner Anderson. She was also predeceased by her devoted and loving husband of thirty-five years, Beverly Walter LaDage, and her precious youngest daughter, Sally Scarce (Michael). She is survived by her three daughters, Marcia Wimer (Ralph) of Georgetown, Texas, Joyce Lashbrook of Port Huron, Michigan, and Becky Alexander (Jim) of Chesapeake, Virginia; twelve grandchildren, Lori (David Porter) Gougeon, Delana Lott, Mark (Jennifer) Lashbrook, Michael (Michelle) Wimer, Jeff (Debra) Lashbrook, Melanie (Brett) Ellsworth, Shannon Wiens, Heather (Josh) Wilson, Kristen and Matthew (Caitlyn) Scarce, Heather Vanderploeg, and Kimberly Jordan. Also left to cherish her memory are her nineteen great-grandchildren, Ryann and Landry Ellsworth, McKennon Wimer, Jordan and Nikolas Gougeon, Hannah, Reid and Mattison Lashbrook, Jared and Sidney Lott, Anderson Wiens, Liam, Hannah, and Kate Wilson, Courtney Jordan Inghram, Caroline, Callie, and Colton Jordan, and Alexa Vanderploeg; along with a host of nieces, nephews, and friends too numerous to count. She was known to those who loved her as Granny Z, G-Gram, Grandma Dage, Grandmama, Zenobia, and a precious few who called her "Snoabie." She made everyone feel special because she was the ultimate encourager. She was witty and could simply light up a room just with her presence. She showed us all the art of growing old gracefully. Nothing could slow her down. She kept up with her baseball and football teams, loved watching tennis, and cheered her "Cubbies" as they won the World Series. She was current on local and world events, was quite political, and took pride that she voted in this year's Presidential election. She was known for her "calendars" the famous "red address box," and the unforgettable "recipe box," which she took with her everywhere she traveled. It was her way to stay connected to all those she dearly loved. She was the consummate card player. It was her custom to teach all the grands and greats the proper etiquette of playing cards. She weaned them all on their childhood favorites until they were ready for the traditional family games of Progressive Rummy and Spite & Malice. She was a legendary card shark…but a modest one.As a child of the Depression she learned quickly to be resilient, independent, and resourceful. At the age of fourteen she was working in a restaurant for the breakfast, lunch, and dinner shifts all while going to high school. Despite this schedule she still managed to fully participate at school as a cheerleader, catcher on the baseball team, and co-editor for "The Waverly Hi-Times." She also starred alongside her beloved Bev in many of the school plays, was on the tennis team and was an avid Bridge player throughout her life. After graduation in 1932, she moved to Wilmington, Delaware, where she worked for the DuPont Company as a stenographer. She married her childhood sweetheart in 1938 and they began their thirty-five year journey together creating a beautiful family of four girls based on family, faith in God, service to others, and a love for education. She was the BEST mother… always nurturing us, encouraging our extracurricular activities and being there as our Girl Scout Cookie Chair or hard-working PTA President and room mother. She was widowed in 1973 and for the next 43 years she continued her love of helping and serving others. But her first love was family…making those famous phone calls to make sure all was well not to mention those car or plane trips to welcome grandchildren or just stay for a long visit. She'd been a staunch supporter of Salvation Army and served as President of their Auxiliary and Advisory Boards. The impact of her organizational and leadership skills could be seen as she worked her magic as Chairman of Wilmington Garden Day in 1977 and with her beloved Episcopal Church in the capacity as Altar Guild Chair to Vestryman and Junior Warden. She was also was the recipient of the Religious Heritage of America Award for Outstanding Community Leadership in 1979. In 1985 she represented the state of Delaware as their "Mother of the Year" and continued her love for this organization well into her nineties. She traveled to their National Conventions each year and served as Delaware's state president for American Mothers for years. In her nineties she moved to Michigan and lived in a retirement community where she opened "Our Little Store" so residents could purchase needed items without having to leave the building. She created a Board for the store and left an indelible legacy of traditions, trips and activities for all the residents at the Dorchester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Clair County Council on Aging. A Memorial Service will be conducted at 11:00 am, Saturday, December 3, 2016, at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church, located at 201 Saint Paul's Boulevard, Norfolk, VA.The family will receive friends on Friday, December 2 from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm at Oman Funeral Home and Crematory located at 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake, VA. Family and friends are invited to sign the online guestbook and share a memory at www.omanfh.com.
