Mertens, Winifred "Winnie" M.Winifred "Winnie" M. Mertens, 93, of New Holstein, Wisconsin, peacefully passed away Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at Atrium Post Acute Care Center in New Holstein.The former Winifred Neumann was born on February 1, 1924, in New Holstein to Frank & Rose (Faust) Neumann.She attended New Holstein Grade School and graduated from New Holstein High School in 1942.On November 28, 1945, she married Robert Mertens at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in New Holstein. Bob preceded her in death on August 9, 2010.Winnie was employed at Hart Carter Company from 1942-1950 and Tecumseh Engine Products from 1964-1989.Winnie was a life-time member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in New Holstein. She was also a member of the Christian Womens Society, the New Holstein Historical Society, and Catholic Order of Foresters. For 72 years, she was a member of the New Holstein American Legion Auxiliary, serving as its president. Winnie chaired the Legion Auxiliary Poppy fundraiser for numerous years.Winnie and her husband Bob traveled throughout the United States and to several countries, including Italy, Mexico, Israel and Japan. Winnie was very lively and outgoing. She never missed an opportunity to chat and joke with family, neighbors and her many friends. She was an avid cook and enjoyed canning; dill pickles were one of her specialties. Winnie was also well-known for baking an enormous assortment of Christmas cookies every year for family, friends, and community events.Survivors include her two children, her daughter, Diane Mertens and her husband, William (Larry) Neuman, of Madison and her son, Michael (Robyn) Mertens of Plymouth; her granddaughter, Michael & Robyn's daughter, Sara (Nathan) Nennig of Plymouth; her great-grandson, Lucas; her brother, Richard (Joan) Neumann of Sheboygan; two brothers-in-law, James (Irene) Mertens of Kiel and Clem (Pat) Mertens of Green Bay; and two sisters-in-law, Catherine (Ed) Schumacher of Waukegan, IL and Sister Mary Jane Mertens of Holy Family Convent in Manitowoc. She is further survived by nieces; nephews; other relatives; and friends.Preceding her in death were her parents, Frank & Rose Neumann; her husband, Robert Mertens; and two brothers, Robert Neumann & Raymond Neumann.A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, April 22, 2017, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 1724 Madison Street, New Holstein, WI 53061. Rev. Pat Nelson SDS will officiate with Parish Director, Joe Zenk, assisting.
