Wilma K. Kelly August 17, 1920 November 6, 2016 Wilma K. Kelly, 96, of State College, died on November 6, 2016. Wilma was born on August 17, 1920, in Raymond, PA, daughter of the late Millard F. and Eliza M. Kidney and she was raised in Potter County, located in northern Pennsylvania, in a rural farming community. She graduated from Ulysses High School in 1938. Wilma earned a Bachelor's Degree in 1943 from Mansfield State Teachers College and a Master's Degree in Education from Penn State in 1949. In 1945, Wilma married B. Wayne Kelly, also from Potter County, who predeceased her in 2007. Wilma taught for seven years in several high schools in York and Centre County as well as a school system in Maryland until the first of her three children was born. Wilma was active in the State College area. She was a member of the University Baptist and Brethren Church for more than sixty years serving over the years as the church clerk, a deacon, on the Sunday school board of education, a Sunday school teacher and on the board of missions. She served as a regular Centre Crest volunteer for over thirty years providing transportation for residents, working in the beauty salon, and organizing Bingo nights. When her children were young, she volunteered with the Girl Scouts of America and the Cub Scouts. For many years, she was active in the PTA serving as secretary. She was a member of the United Church Women. She belonged to the Centre County Family and Consumer Sciences Club. Wilma was a member of the White Shrine of Jerusalem #46 serving as Worthy High Priestess for several years and also was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She actively supported Wayne in his work as a founding member of the State College Masonic Learning Center for Children tutoring children with dyslexia, a neurologically based learning disability interfering with speech, reading and writing. In retirement, Wilma and Wayne traveled extensively throughout North America, Europe and Asia. During the summer months, they often toured with the Central Pennsylvania unit of the Wally Byam Airstream Caravan Club. Together with Wayne, she was active in the PSU Retirees Staff and Faculty Club. She is survived by three children, Bruce Kelly of Chicago, IL, Elizabeth Scanlon and her husband, Thomas, of Pittsburgh, PA, and Barbara Hill and her husband, Stephen, of Fort Myers, FL, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held 1:00 PM on November 19, 2016, at the University Baptist and Brethren Church, 411 S. Burrowes St., State College with the Rev. Bonnie Kline Smeltzer officiating. Burial has taken place in a private service at Centre Community Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the University Baptist and Brethren Church.
