William W. Woodrow Jr.MANSFIELD: William W. Woodrow Jr., age 88, of Mansfield, Ohio died December 8th, 2016 after a brief illness. He was born on December 5th, 1928 in Baltimore, Maryland, the eldest son of William Wallace and Thelma Underwood Woodrow. In 1946, he was graduated from Greensburg High School, and later went on to attend Seton Hill College in Greensburg, PA and Allegheny College, in Meadville, PA.Bill was a true patriot, and believing in the inalienable rights and freedoms of all persons, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1946. In 1951, he was recalled to serve as an Infantryman in the Army's 7th U.S. Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division in the Korean War, and served in both Korea and Japan. He was honorably discharged in 1952 at the age of 23, with the rank of Sergeant Major, 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment. His personal decorations include: The Combat Infantryman Badge, The Purple Heart Medal, The Army Commendation Medal, and The Good Conduct Medal. His service medals include the World War II Victory Medal, The Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), The Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Campaign Stars, The United Nations Service Medal (Korea), The National Defense Service Medal, and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal. His Korean Battalion was awarded a United States Presidential Unit Citation and The Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation. His Regiment was also bestowed the Greek Gold Medal for Bravery by the King of Greece.Following his discharge from the military, Bill took a position in Sales at Robertshaw Controls Company, where he was based out of Chicago, IL, New Stanton, PA and Mansfield, OH over the years. Bill eventually served as Vice President of Marketing and Sales for Robertshaw, before retiring to Mansfield, OH in 1996 after 46 years with the company. During this time, he met and married his late wife Jane Shrum, and together they had three children. In 1973, he married Rose Mary Derror, with whom he celebrated 43 years of marriage this year. She preceded him in death by just 10 short months.Bill was an active member of his community, and served on the Board of Commissioners for the Richland County Veterans Service Commission, and was a life member and Past President of the Richland County Chapter #51, Korean War Veterans Association. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3494, AMVETS Post #26, The Military Order of the Purple Heart, and The Disabled American Veterans, Richland County Chapter #21. He also belonged to the Marine Corps League, Richland County Marines, Detachment #527, The 7th Cavalry Regiment Association and the American Legion Post #16. He was a retired Trustee of Mansfield's Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Building, and had been a reading tutor at Prospect Elementary School. He was an active member of the First Congregational Church and participated in The Hermit Club, The Gild of Ancient Supplers, F & AM Venus Lodge #152, and the Baku Grotto.In addition to all of his community service and volunteering, Bill truly enjoyed traveling, golfing and sailing. He enjoyed racing his sailboat at the Mansfield Sailing Club at Clear Fork Reservoir with his wife, Rose Mary. Bill served as Commodore of the Mansfield Sailing Club in 1982 and 1994.He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Rose Mary Woodrow, and son, Frederick Land Woodrow. He is survived by his daughter Diana G. Woodrow (June Thorne), son, William W. Woodrow III (Linda), and granddaughter Amanda J.Woodrow, all of Mansfield, son Paul F. Woodrow (Kristina) of Ashville, Ohio, step-daughter Kristy Damron (David) of Mansfield, grandson Brant (Sarah) Hamel, great grand-daughter Jillian Hamel, great-grandson, William Hamel, granddaughter Nicole Liebner (Dr. David Liebner), and great-grandson Jonathan Liebner, step-son Randall (Beth) Derror of Mansfield, a brother, Dr. Thomas W. Woodrow of Huntingdon, PA, niece Ruth Bancroft of Adie, VA, and a nephew, Thomas W. Woodrow (Nikki) of Pittsburgh, PA.Friends may call at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond Street, on Sunday, December 11th from 1pm - 4pm with inurnment and memorial services to follow at First Congregational Church, 640 Millsboro Road, Mansfield on Wednesday, December 14th at 1:00 p.m, with Pastor Bruce Haapalainen officiating. Full military services will be provided by the Richland County Joint Veterans Council. A time for fellowship will immediately follow the military services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The First Congregational Church, the Richland County Chapter #51, Korean War Veterans Association, or The Mansfield Sailing Club.
