Nov 04, 1934 - Jan 03, 2017
This obituary is administered by:
Feller, William "Bill"William J. "Bill" Feller, age 82, of Appleton passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 3, 2017. He was born on November 4, 1934 in Antigo, Wisconsin to the late Raymond J. and Marion (Gallagher) Feller. Bill grew up in Antigo and attended Antigo High School. In high school, he tried out for the basketball team but didn't make it. By his own admission he was "too short and awkward " . After high school, Bill enlisted in the Air Force and spent four years in various stations in Europe during the Korean War. In addition to guarding weapons installations, he practiced basketball and played with a traveling team. He grew more than a foot during his years in the Air Force. Bill parlayed his basketball skills into a scholarship at St. Norbert College where he set the all-time scoring record that held for over 20 years. He also received leadership honors and was later inducted into the St. Norbert Athletic Hall of Fame. After graduating St. Norbert in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science in Business, Bill worked in computer sales for Burroughs, Singer, and Frieden before starting his own business, Benchmark Computer Systems, in 1976. During his career, he was actively involved in the St. Bernadette Athletic Association, Xavier High School Board and the Xavier Booster Club. After retiring from Benchmark, he volunteered as an AARP tax preparer, worked for the US Census Bureau and was an elections inspector. With a passion for sports throughout his life, Bill coached his kids' grade school teams and loved to follow his grandkids' activities. Golf clubs, fishing poles and a tackle box were always in his car. Greater Bass Lake was a special destination for these activities as well as water sports, dock sports, biking and assorted pyrotechnics. In winter he enjoyed skiing, playing handball at the YMCA and attending Packer games no matter the weather. In 1960, Bill married his college sweetheart, Kathleen Burns in DePere, WI and they were blessed with three children, Ann (Bret) Ballinger, Delafield, WI, Patti Jo Feller, Appleton, WI, and John (Jane) Feller, Fitchburg, WI. Bill was the proud and fun-loving grandparent of Dave Ballinger, Erin Ballinger, Katie Feller, Stephanie Feller and Charlie Feller. He also treasured his many nieces and nephews despite the fact that some of them are Vikings fans. Bill is further survived by his sister Mary Lou Feller, Verona, WI, and brother, Bob (Ellen) Feller, Manitowoc, WI, and brother-in-law Gene Hennes, Shakopee, MN. He was preceded in death by his sister Jackie. Always ready to "socialize", Bill was blessed with fantastic friends and neighbors - past and present - of all ages who were with him for fun and frolic in the earlier days and also there for unwavering 7x 24 support, stories, and laughs in the later years. A memorial service will be held on May 20, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 2331 E. Lourdes Drive in Appleton. Visitation will be held that same day starting at 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Military Honors will follow the Memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. Norbert College.Bill's family would like to thank the many people who showed him special kindness and support particularly Dr. Maria Aristigueta, Dr. Michael Johnson and their staffs as well as Dr. James Beck, Cindy, and the many caregivers he had at ThedaCare and of course his "Bahama Mama" outpatient team. When we need to remember him at his best, we will remember him telling tales around a campfire, cheering grandkids on at sporting events, enjoying a sunny day at Bass Lake or chasing a sunset/moonrise in Door County. Bill would want us to tilt our heads to the sun, embrace friends and family, love life, talk to everyone everywhere and just keep on laughing.Condolences can me made online at
