 William "Daisy" Dale Gilbert, age 95, passed away on Thursday, March 17, 2016, at the McKinley Health Center in Brookville, PA. He was born on January 18, 1921, in Brookville PA. He is the oldest son of the late Harvey J. and Maude E. (Raybuck) Gilbert. He attended the Brookville schools and graduated in 1939. He attended the Erie Business College in the fall but transferred to Clarion State Teachers College where he played football and baseball for the next 2 years. In the summer of 1941 he enrolled in the American Aircraft Institute in Chicago. Upon graduation, he took a job with the Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Company in Baltimore as a company inspector. He went into the U.S. Navy in the fall of 1943. He went through boot camp at Sampson N.Y. and was assigned to the Keystone Radio School at Bedford Springs, Bedford PA. After graduation, he was transferred to the West Coast and Hawaii before being assigned to the U.S.S. Hornet-CV 12, the flag ship of Task Group #1, of task Group 58. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on December 31, 1945, with the following ribbons: Presidential Citation, Asiatic-Pacific, Philippian Liberation, American Theater of War and the Victory Medal. In January of 1946 he returned to Clarion to complete his Bachelors degree. After graduation, he helped form the alumni association and was president for 6 years and received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1978. He was a teacher at the Clearfield Aviation School for 2 years before going to Pittsburgh for his Masters degree at Pitt. While there he was a coach and teacher at Moon Township High School before moving back to Brookville to teach and coach at North Clarion High School for 32 years. He received his Guidance certification from Penn State and Westminster College. He served for 2 years as State President of the Pennsylvania Federation of Junior Historians. He was co-founder of the Jefferson County Historical Society and served as President for 8 years as well as being President of the Clarion County Historical Society for 6 years. He has served with the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts for many years and received the Silver Beaver Award as well as a 75 years of scouting award. He was a member of the Mount Tabor Presbyterian Church and served on the session for 3 terms. He is a 32nd degree Mason and belongs to the Jaffa Shrine Club. He was Chairman of the advisory Council for the Jefferson County Area Aging for 2 years and since then has served on the Board of Directors, formerly acting a Treasurer. He is a member of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, a past member of the Warren County Historical Society and the Ephrata Historical Society. He served as the Clarion University Representative on the state Council of Alumni Association for 2 years. He was past President at Clarion of Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity. He was a Board Member of the Pennsylvania of Council of Aging representing the Northwest region. He was a board member of the Pennsylvania Foundation for 4 years. He served as Vice President and President of the Mid-Western Council for Social Studies and was a member of the state and national council. He served as President of the Jefferson-Clarion office of Economic Opportunities for 3 years and was the director of the 2 county summer Head Start program. He received the Volunteer of the year award from the P.A.S.R in 1996, the Outstanding Service Award from the Jefferson County Historical Society in 1997 and the Lifetime Service award from the Brookville Area Chamber of Commerce in 1997. He also received the Arthur Altman award in 2007 from Jefferson County Historical Society and was recently honored as a 75 year Mason. Baseball was a big part of his life. First as a player with the Brookville Greys and the Mountain League. He was also part of an undefeated college team while at Clarion. Then as a coach for many years with the Sigel Cubs Teener League team. His love of baseball took him to many ball parks across the nation. He also was a catcher at Forbes Field. After retirement, he was a tour guide with the Frank Baur Bus Company going to various cities but mainly New York City. He was an Avid Photographer, President of the Camera Club during college; he has a lifetime of photos that he took saved in printed memory all throughout his home. He is survived by 10 Children; Tom (Claudia) Gilbert, Linda Price, Pat Abell, David Gilbert, Donald (Susan) Gilbert, Rebecca (Rodger) Lindemuth, Dale (Judy) Gilbert, Dan (Teresa) Gilbert, Doug (Linda) Gilbert, Dean (Melissa) Gilbert; 23 grandchildren, Scott, Ty, Lisa, Amanda, Kim, Chris, Christina (Barth), Dawn (Craig), Angela, Brody, Brian, Scott (Jennie), Jill (Dave), Jodi, Megan (Scott), Jessica, Ben, Andy, Nicole (Austan), Amy (Wes), Madison, Kennedy, Zachery; 25 great-grandchildren, Autumn, Julian, Giselle, Grace, Ty, Joclynn, Jacob, Ashley, Brandon, Megan, Kyle, Ryan, Abby, Sam, Kendra, Brady, Domenique, Delaney, MacKenzie, Mark, Cali, Lyla, Domenic, Axel, Kamryn; and many Neices and Nephews. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his 1st wife, Nellie Johns; his second wife and the love of his life, Bonnie (Bush) Gilbert; 2 brothers, Paul and Leon; 1 infant daughter Peggy; and 1 granddaughter, Ashley Gilbert. Daisy was the last surviving member of his family. Family and friends will be received on Friday, March 18, 2016, from 4-8pm, at the McKinney - d'Argy Funeral Home, 345 Main St., Brookville PA, 15825. A second day of visitation will take place on Saturday, March 19, 2016, from 12 - 3pm and 4-8pm, with a Masonic service taking place at 7:30pm, also at the McKinney d'Argy Funeral Home. A funeral service will take place on Sunday, March 20, 2016, at the Mount Tabor Presbyterian Church, 7230 Route 36, Sigel, PA 15860, beginning at 2:00pm, and officiated by Rev. Boyd Edmundson. Interment will take place at the Mount Tabor Cemetery, Eldred Township, Jefferson Co., PA. Memorial contribution may be made in his name to the Mount Tabor Presbyterian Church, PO Box 128, Sigel PA, 15860, or a charity of the donors choosing.
