William Charles Lyons Obituary

Jan 01, 2017 - Feb 01, 2017

This obituary is administered by:
William "Bill" Charles Lyonswas born on Jan. 11, 1947 in Indianapolis, IN; he lived most of his life in the metropolitan area. He passed away from the complications of Parkinson's and Lewy Body Dementia on Feb. 12. Preceding him in death were his father and mother Charles "Red" and Mary Lassiter Lyons and his sister Beverly Jones.Bill left Arsenal Tech High School to join the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam Era and worked as a helicopter mechanic rising to the rank of Corporal. Once he returned to Indy, he used the GI Bill to earn his BS in Business from Indiana University. Upon graduation he launched a 30+ year career in Industrial Sales selling machinery, grinding wheels, industrial gears, etc. His dedication to the job and to his customers resulted in his earning Top Salesman awards. He also enjoyed participation in local Toastmasters Clubs to further enhance his sales success. In 1975 Bill married his wife Pamela Waggoner Lyons who was a high school teacher of Public Speaking and English for 37 years until her retirement. Their pride and joy comes from their accomplished children Natalie Ann and Bradley William (Jenn). Some of his most pleasurable moments have come from running races, deep sea fishing, shooting hoops and golfing with Brad. Additionally, he experienced great pride watching Natalie perform in talent shows, operas and musicals. Watching his children develop their own successful careers, Natalie as a civil rights attorney and Brad as VP of Sales, was another source of deep pride. Most of his adult life, Bill was an avid golfer, deep sea fisherman, runner, and ping pong player. Always active, he loved to find the competition in everything and enjoyed close friendships that revolved around the activities he pursued.  Family and friends alike knew you could grab Bill's interest if you offered any type of challenge, whether that be at the free throw line, at the poker table, in a 5K walk/run, behind a ping pong paddle or on a putting green. His exuberance for life was infectious, and his positive outlook was much admired.A celebration of life service will be held at 1 p.m. Thurs. Feb. 16 at Matthews Mortuary, 690 E. 56th St., Brownsburg, IN, with visitation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Bill's family would encourage you to donate to one of his two favorite causes: Rock Steady Boxing, "Fighting Back against Parkinson's," 6847 Hillsdale Ct., Indianapolis, IN 46250 or Quantum Martial Arts, "Sponsor a Kid Change a Life," 2390 Mission St., San Francisco, CA 94110.
