CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - William Carl Whitlock, Jr., passed away Thursday, August 29, 2013. Carl was born on July 25, 1923, in Charlottesville, Virginia to William Carl Whitlock, Sr. and Sarah Hamilton Whitlock. As a boy, he spent many days playing tennis and golf at Farmington Country Club. After graduating from Lane High School in 1940, he attended Randolph- Macon College in Ashland, Va. where he played football and joined Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity. Upon President Roosevelt?s announcement of the Japanese invasion of Pearl Harbor, Carl?s entire fraternity enlisted in the armed forces. After attending the
U.S. Navy Flight Training Center in Pensacola, Fla., Carl was stationed in Hawaii where he flew Hellcat and Wildcat fighter planes. After World War II, he attended the University of Virginia where he met Judith Page Mims of Luray, Va. They married in 1947 and he graduated from the University in 1950. He began a 32 year career with the DuPont Corporation and moved with Judy to North Carolina. They raised four sons there and were active members at St. Mary?s Episcopal Church in Kinston, N.C. They also enjoyed many hours playing tennis with family and friends. Carl retired from DuPont in 1982 and moved with Judy to his childhood home near the University in Charlottesville. This brought them closer to the children and five grandchildren in Ivy, Va. They played tennis at Boar?s Head Sports Club and joined St. Paul?s Episcopal Church. They frequently traveled to their summer house on the Shenandoah River in Page County and to Wrightsville Beach, N.C. Carl was the quintessential Virginia gentleman in all manner.
