Walter W. "Buster" Hummel went out on a firecracker on Friday, July 4, 2014. Buster was born on May 7, 1948 in Long Beach, California to Walter M. Hummel and Erma "Babe" Leyde Hummel. In his youth he was active in softball, basketball and DeMolay. After graduating from Hilltop High School he entered the
U.S. Air Force and served proudly in Texas, California, Thailand, Viet Nam, New Mexico and Germany for 7 years. After the Air Force, Buster and family moved to Yuma, Arizona. Buster worked for Safeway for almost three years. Buster was a graduate of the 112th Session of the U.S. Border Patrol, Los Fresnos, Texas. He served with the Border Patrol from 1976 until 2003 and his service included assignments at Calexico, California, Yuma, Arizona and Wellton, Arizona. He was a role model for an entire generation of Yuma Border Patrol Agents.Buster is remembered by the Kofa Band members as "Dad" for serving as chaperone, props carrier, and Mr. fix it, find it, or go get it in 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991. He was "Santa Claus" for many years to the
Special Olympics, Saguaro Foundation Homes and many other philanthropic organizations in town. He served one year in the Christmas parade and the Christmas Village. Buster was an avid motorcyclist and a member of the International Blue Knight Law Enforcement motorcycle club. He served several offices of the local chapter and was the Southwest Conference Treasurer for many years. He and his wife traveled throughout the United States and Canada. He made friends around the world. Buster was a wonderful husband, father, son, and brother.Buster is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 46 years, Gaye (Thayer) Hummel; son, David M. Hummel of Yuma, AZ; brother, Robert "Bob" Hummel of Chula Vista, CA; sister, Sandra "Sandy" M. (Tom) Ballard of Clancy, MT; numerous nephews and nieces. Buster was preceded in death by his father, Walter M. Hummel; and mother, Erma L. Hummel.Per Buster's wishes there will be no services.
