This obituary is administered by:
Voncile Sangaree McLeodVoncile Sangaree McLeod, 99, of Apalachicola, Florida, passed away peacefully on September 14th, 2017 at Cross Shores Care Center in Port St Joe, Florida. Funeral services will be held 3:00PM EST on Sunday, September 17th, 2017 at First United Methodist Church, 75 5th St, Apalachicola, Florida 32320 with Reverend Themo Patriotis officiating. The family will receive friends after the service with a reception in the Fellowship Hall. A private interment will be held at Magnolia Cemetery in Apalachicola.Voncile was born on March 4th, 1918 in Panama City, Florida, the daughter of the late Rhonat and Ardelle Sangaree. Her family moved to Apalachicola when she was only a few years old, and her father, a barber, went into business with his brother Veto. They ran the local barber shop for over fifty years. Shortly after graduating from Chapman High School in 1936, Voncile married James Carol McLeod, son of Apalachicola attorney R. Don McLeod. Carol worked at his radio and TV repair business next to The Grill by day, and was a projectionist at the old Dixie Theater by night. Voncile was a homemaker and she and Carol raised two sons. Voncile loved people, loved her family, and loved Apalachicola. In her later years, she loved to go to the Gibson Inn and meet her friends and newcomers on Friday evenings. She would tell all the newcomers that Apalachicola was "paradise" and encouraged them to visit often. Her enthusiasm endeared her to all those she met, and no one was a stranger to her. Many have referred to her as "the Queen of Apalachicola". Voncile was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the oldest member of the PHILACO club. Voncile was preceded in death by her parents, Rhonat (1970) and Ardelle (1982); her beloved husband, Carol (1978); her sister Christine Bloodworth (1937); Marguerite Connell (2001); and Juanita Mays (2017). Surviving family members include two sons, Jim (Becky), Don (Ana); a sister, Helena Powers, and a brother, Lawrence Sangaree; five grandchildren: Jim McLeod (Diana), Kimberly Tubbs, Durand McLeod (Sherri), Rod McLeod (Kim), Ian McLeod (Becky); ten great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 75 5th Street, Apalachicola, Florida 32320. Online condolences may be offered at whatleyfuneralservices.com.
