Vivian Dolores Nass DiMassimoAGE: 82 • Ocean CityVivian Dolores Nass DiMassimo died on September 4, 2017 in Somers Point, NJ near her home in Ocean City. She was 82 years old. Joseph DiMassimo, her partner and husband of 61 years, was at her side. Vivian was a first generation Norwegian-American, the youngest child of Andrew and Aasta (Strand) Nass. Andrew and Aasta emigrated from Norway, met in the US, married and had three children, Earl, Louise and Vivian. Vivian was born on April 30, 1935 in Barnegat City, NJ, today named Barnegat Light. Her father was a commercial fisherman out of Barnegat City and Vivian and her siblings attended Barnegat City Public School, a one-room school, which today stands as the Barnegat Light Museum. Vivian moved with her family to Haddonfield when her father took a job in the NJ Shipyard in Camden following the start of World War II. The family later moved to Camden and Vivian graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1952. Vivian and Joe married in 1956, nine days before Vivian's 21rst birthday. Vivian worked with and supported Joe in his gas station business for almost 40 years - the first, Joe's Mobil in Camden, opened in 1959 and was located around the corner from their home on Mickle Street. Subsequent gas stations were located in Audubon, Westmont and Cherry Hill. Vivian attended college later in life and graduated with honors with a degree in Communications from Rowan University (then called Glassboro State College) in 1980. While there she enjoyed covering the 1980 presidential campaign for the college newspaper. Vivian had a life long interest in needlepoint and for many years stitched pillows, wall hangings and ornaments of various kinds for friends and family. Throughout her life Vivian was also an avid player of all kinds of games including Mah-jongg, scrabble and boggle and enjoyed crossword puzzles. Vivian enjoyed socializing with her friends and neighbors in the Ocean City community and, with Joe, was active in the American Legion and Italian American Club. Her many friends provided great support to Vivian when she battled illness in her later years. Vivian is survived by her husband Joe; sons Vincent (Cindy) of Summit, NJ, Richard of Maple Shade, NJ and Philip (Dori) of Wayne, Pa., six grandchildren, Jack, Sara, Ashley, Hanna, Jane and Grace, her loving nieces and nephews and many relatives in Norway. Siblings Earl and Louise predeceased her. Funeral arrangements will take place on Monday, September 11 at the Godfrey Funeral Home of Palermo, 644 South Shore Road, Palermo, NJ. The funeral service will begin at 11am and friends may call from 9am to 11am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Vivian's honor be made to the American Legion Post 524, PO Box 363, Ocean City, NJ. 08226.
