Sammon, VirginiaVirginia "Ginny" Sammon, age 90, of Schofield, passed away peacefully on December 12, 2016, at Azura Memory Care in Oconomowoc. She was born on March 11, 1926, in Wausau, daughter of the late Fred and Dorothy Genrich. Virginia graduated from Wausau High School in 1944. She attended Stephens College, Columbia Missouri, for two years; and Northwestern University, Evanston, IL from 1946-48, where she was a member of Alpha Phi Sorority, graduating with a B.S. degree from the School of Speech. In 1949 she returned to Northwestern where she earned an education degree. In 1950 she was employed as an English, speech and drama teacher at Streator Township High School, Streator, IL. During the fall of 1953 she accepted a position with the U.S. Army Special Services in CA as a Recreation Director planning programs for the enlisted Men's Service Clubs. While stationed at Fort Ord, CA, she met Captain Marlan Sammon, her future husband. They were married in Wausau, May 21, 1955. For several years the Sammons lived in Oshkosh, WI where Captain Sammon was assigned as a liaison officer with the U.S. Army and the Wisconsin National Guard. It was during this time their first child Michael was born in 1958. The Sammons were soon transferred to Bremerhaven, Germany, for four years where Captain Sammon was assigned as Director of Logistics. While in Bremerhaven, Virginia served as the Vice President of the Officers Wives Club where she was in charge of their philanthropic and social activities. She was also a member of the North Sea Armed Forces Order of the Eastern Star; and a member and soloist with the "Green Room Choristers" and Community Theatre group of Northern Germany. After leaving Germany for Camp McCoy, WI where Major Sammon retired, the Sammon family moved to the Wausau area, where their second child, Marion was born in 1963. Active as both wife and mother, Virginia was also a substitute teacher in Wausau area schools, but eventually in 1977, Virginia accepted the position of English, speech and drama teacher at D.C. Everest Senior High School where she was employed for 14 ½ years until her retirement in 1988. During her tenure at D. C. Everest, Mrs. Sammon took many of her speech, drama, and forensics students to state competitions where they earned many of the highest honors. While in the Wausau area, she was involved with the Cub Scouts, Children's Theatre, and the Agape Theatre. She also enjoyed special times with a local Red Hat group, "The Dazzling Divas," and her ladies leisure league golf group at the Wausau Country Club. Her civic memberships included being a long time member of the former Wausau Club and the Wausau Country Club. As a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, she was a member and soloist with their choir from many years. She was also a member of Trinity-by-the -cove Episcopal Church, Naples, FL. She enjoyed music and drama programs and all outdoor activities, especially golf. She also enjoyed special times spent with friends and family in Naples, FL, the Wausau area, and her special retreat at a cottage near Tomahawk.Virginia was proceeded in death by her son, Michael and her husband, Marlan. Survivors include daughter Marion Stenz, Okauchee; former son-in-law Doug, and their children Chris and Nick, town of Ottawa; stepdaughter Star DeHaven The Sea Ranch, CA and her children Cheryl and Gregg; stepson Jesse Ukiah, CA and his children Tami, Sherie, Jessica and Jeff; sister Jamie (Joe) Steuer, Naples, FL and other nieces and nephews.
