Hughes, Virginia D.Virginia Darte Hughes, age 98, of Plymouth, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at her home. She was born on October 28, 1918 in Green Bay, WI, a daughter of the late Clarence and Della (nee Glenzer) Jahn. She attended Mason Street Elementary and Howe Elementary schools and graduated from Green Bay East High in 1937. She graduated from Carroll College in 1941 with a B.A. in History and Art. After the war on June 20, 1946 she married James R. Hughes whom she me met at Carroll College. They lived in Milwaukee while he attended Marquette Law School after which they moved to Plymouth where they raised their family and resided for the rest of their lives. Her husband preceded her in death on April 16, 2004. Virginia was a charter member of Redeemer Lutheran Church. She was active in Meals on Wheels, the Friday Night Golf group and the Tuesday Morning Golf League at Quit Qui Oc. She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and served on the church council. Virginia was also a member of the Red Hats. She was an avid reader of books and enjoyed traveling. She was an oil painter and loved the art classes at the Plymouth Art Center where she was a member. Her paintings now grace the homes of her children and grandchildren. Virginia was known for her physical activity. She completed the Plymouth Trial Riders 50 mile endurance race on her beloved horse, Misty. She was a faithful member of the 8:30 A.M. exercise class. Besides golf and horseback riding, she enjoyed Green Bay Packer games, and cross country skiing. Well into her 90's she could bend over and touch the floor with her palms. Virginia and Jim enjoyed the company of family and friends. They were fortunate to be surrounded by a circle of close friends. She was a wonderful mother to her five children who survive her: Deborah Garrity of Highlands Ranch, CO; James (Faye) of Plymouth, Brian (Lisa Rohn) of Martha's Vineyard, MA, Patrick of Plymouth, Timothy (Emily) of Arlington, VA; Eight grandchildren: Samantha and James Garrity of Highlands Ranch, CO, Colin Hughes of Washington DC, Margaret Hughes of Los Angeles, CA, Kelsey Hughes (John Sealy) of Seattle, WA, Elliot Hughes of Milwaukee, and Sullivan and Elijah Hughes of Arlington, VA; Many cousins and her faithful dog, Finley. Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, James; Son-in-law, James Garrity; and her sister, Beverly.Funeral services will be held on Friday Morning (May 26, 2017) at 11:30 A.M. at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Plymouth. Rev. Casey Sugden, pastor of the church will officiate. Burial will be next to her loving husband at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery in Plymouth. Visitation with the family will be held on Friday morning at the CHURCH from 10:00 A.M. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in Virginia's name.
