Virginia Cross Obituary

Feb 01, 2016 - Nov 24, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
Virginia Ruth Cross passed away peacefully on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2016. Virginia was born on Feb. 26, 1928, in Monterey Park, Calif., to Marshall and Maye White. She was an only child who was adored by her parents, aunts and uncles. She loved to dance and studied tap and popular dancing as a young child. When she was 11 years old, she was named the "Storybook Princess" for Alhambra's annual Storybook Parade and led the parade on a float in front of 20,000 parade goers. Virginia met the love of her life, John, in her senior year at UCLA. They met on a blind date when she was serving as president of her sorority and he was president of his fraternity. They married on Nov. 19, 1949, and were rarely apart for the rest of their long and happy marriage. Virginia and John moved to Tulelake in February 1950 and farmed potatoes, barley, oats and alfalfa. The move to Tulelake for Virginia, a Southern California city girl, was at times challenging, but she wouldn't have changed her life with John for anything. She served as bookkeeper for Newell Potato Co-op and traveled extensively with John, promoting the Castle Rock Brand of potatoes. The expression "behind every great man is a great woman" personified Virginia. In all of her beloved John's success, she was the quiet force behind him. Virginia was a wonderful Mom, who loved her three children with devotion. Christmas was her favorite time of year and buying presents and sending out cards was her joy. She also had lists of her friends' and neighbors' birthdays and anniversaries and sent cards to them for years. Virginia was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority Chapter in Tulelake. The friendships and charity provided by this group of women for their community was very important to her. The countless charities Virginia quietly contributed to year after year was astounding. The world was a better place because of her. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law John and Susan Cross; daughter and son-in-law Diane and Mike Tyrholm; and son Robert Cross. She adored her grandchildren Jeremiah Cross, Shawn and Kimberly Cross, Capt. John Tyrholm, USAF, Jordyn Tyrholm, and Jamie and Tony Sanders. Virginia was also very proud of her six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband John and an infant grandson Benjamin Cross. A private interment was held Saturday, Nov. 19, at Klamath Memorial Park on what would have been Virginia and John's 67th wedding anniversary. They are now together again for eternity. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. The family would like to thank Pelican Pointe for their love, devotion and care of their Mom and, in her final days, High Desert Hospice was a great comfort to Virginia. Davenport's Chapel of the Good Shepherd, directors, at 2680 Memorial Drive, Klamath Falls, OR 97601, (541-883-3458), is in charge of the arrangements.
