Victor CHÉNIER Obituary

Nov 24, 1924 - Jan 22, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
CHÉNIER, VictorIn loving memory of Victor Chénier, who passed away in Ottawa on November 22, 2016, two days before his 92nd birthday. Victor is reunited with his darling wife of 68 years, Claire (Plante), who died only three weeks earlier. Victor was born on November 24, 1924, in Cleveland, Ohio, and spent his childhood in Maniwaki and Wrightville (Hull). He leaves in mourning his sons Pierre (Jean Boivin) and Robert (Maya Berci) and his daughter Andrée (late Don Demers); his grandchildren Ani Chénier (Wade Vance), Alexis Chénier (Geneviève Dumais), Gabriel Chénier Demers, Jaiden Mackenzie and Kyler Mackenzie. He was predeceased by his parents Alfred Chénier, born in Maniwaki, and Alice Doré of Masson, and his brothers and sisters: Lionel (late Jeanne Watling), Léa (m.i.c.), Noëlla (late Emile Gratton), Raymond (Thérèse Laflèche) and Bernard (Bernice Bedard). His life was marked by service, whether it be to his family, school, church, or the community. He attributed his values to the years spent with the Wrightville scout troop: resourcefulness, loyalty, and civic duty were qualities that endured his entire life. He served proudly in the Royal 22nd and the Chaudière Regiments in Europe in the Second World War. Upon his return from the war, he worked at Health Canada where he met his future wife. They were married in 1948, and soon moved to Eastview (Vanier) where they raised their family. He worked as a bookbinder at the National Printing Bureau for 35 years, distinguishing himself with his dedication, resourcefulness, and leadership. He made the best of his retirement, turning his attention to creating, with his wife, a warm home for family and friends. He continued to be involved in the community, notably with the Club Richelieu Vanier-Laurier. He served as spokesperson for the residents of New Edinburgh Square and, up to his final days, those of the Centre d'accueil Champlain. His wife, Claire, used to say that she admired the ease with which he spoke to everyone, whether beggar or royalty. As he loved to serve, he made many connections and touched the lives of many. It was difficult for Victor to accept the progression of his emphysema, as he felt he could no longer "be of service". In spite of this, he was highly devoted to the care of his wife, overseeing her declining health at the Centre d'accueil Champlain until their final days. To his children, Victor imparted his values but also his love of nature. Family was central to both Claire and Victor; Christmas and family dinners were always joyous celebrations. Their family was a great source of pride, a feeling reciprocated by their children and grandchildren. The family would like to thank the personnel and volunteers of the Centre d'accueil Champlain, as well as their family doctor, André Gauthier, for years of excellent care. A ceremony and burial for Victor and Claire will be held at a later date. Donations in his memory may be made to any children's organization. Kindly send any messages of condolences to www.racinerobertgauthier.com.
