Tommie Lee Minor Obituary

Oct 19, 1932 - Jan 02, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
Tommie Lee (Walker) (Briscoe) Minor, age 83, of South Main St., in Brookville PA, passed away peacefully after a quick illness on Tuesday, August 2, 2016, at the Clarion Hospital in Clarion, PA. She was born on October 19, 1932, in Houston, TX, the only child of the late Tommy Ray and Pearlie Ella (Harris) Walker. Tommie was a woman of great faith in God, becoming a Christian at an early age. She was raised in the Baptist tradition until she chose to follow the Lord as a Roman Catholic at the age of twelve years old. Later, Tommie served the Lord as a Lutheran for many years. She had been a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Brookville since 2001. In November of 1957, she married her first husband, Bryant Briscoe, who survives. From that union, two children were born. Later in life she met Ira Aldridge Minor, and on May 4, 1991, they were united in marriage. Ira also survives her. Tommie graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Houston. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Texas Southern University. She earned a post-graduate certificate in Medical Technology then worked for over 30 years as a Medical Technologist at the Houston Veterans Administration Hospital. Tommie then made a major career change and in 1989, she earned a Master of Arts degree, specializing in Counseling Psychology, from the Bowie State University in Bowie, MD. She went on to earn an Advanced Certificate in Psychology at Loyola College in Baltimore. She became a mental health counselor, working in Maryland and then for the Clarion Counseling Center, in Clarion, PA. As time went on she started a private practice from home and eventually worked as a counselor for the Grace Lutheran Church in Brookville, PA. Tommie was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church, the Martha V. Conrad Club, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, National Board of Certified Counselors, Licensed Professional Counselors, American Counseling Association, American Mental Health Counselors Association, North American Society of Adlerian Psychology, as well as many other affiliations. She was passionate about helping people, education, reading, gardening, and walking. She and Ira walked and biked the Cumberland Trail twice. Tommie was able to travel the world because of the conferences she attended as an Adlerian Counselor. Ira would accompany her, as they traveled to many countries, including Limerick, Ireland; London, England; Brno in the Czech Republic, Canada, and twice to Switzerland. Tommie and Ira also took their grandchildren on their world travels, exposing them to the peoples and cultures of the world. When they would visit a new city, they would spend hours walking through the streets and learning where all the restaurants, entertainment, hotspots, and more were in each city; Tommie loved the adventure. Tommie mentored many young people through the years; many of whom called her "Mom." She accomplished much, saw many things, loved her God, and loved her family. She will be missed. In addition to her husband Ira, she is survived by 1 daughter; Dr. Karen (Dr. Rodrick) Stevenson, of Atlanta, GA; 1 son, Brian "David" (LaDonna) Briscoe of Fort Worth, TX; 2 granddaughters; Dr. Cecily (Darren) Anthony; Charlotte (Julian) Hall; 3 grandsons; Brian (LaShay) Briscoe; Christopher D. Stevenson; Corey Stevenson; 4 great-grandchildren; Doralyn, Mia, Laiyah, and Julian; 2 stepchildren Gunther Kristzler and Rosemarie (Horst) Beigler; and a host of friends. Family and friends will be received on Monday, August 8, 2016, from 2 - 4pm and 6 - 8pm, at the McKinney - d'Argy Funeral Home, ltd, 345 Main St., Brookville, PA, 15825. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 9, 2016, at the Grace Lutheran Church, 160 Franklin Ave, Brookville, PA, 15825, beginning at 11:00am and officiated by Pastor Ben Austin.
