A Lifetime of Laughter

Thomas (Tom) Joseph Monaco, 64, of Hoover, Alabama, passed peacefully in his home on Tuesday, May 05, 2020, with his wife by his side.

His wife and son will be greeting family and friends at The Station Church (6270 Park South Drive, Bessemer, AL 35022) from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM Central on Wednesday, May 13, 2020. A service will be held immediately following the visitation. The church is making accommodations for safe distancing. A live stream will also be available at thestationchurch.org. Immediately following the service, family and friends are invited to join a Celebration of Life for Tom at 4517 Cayce Lane in Hoover, AL 35244.

Tom was born in Los Angeles, California to Lawrence and Lydia Monaco on September 19, 1955. In 1964 the family moved to Chino Hills, California. It was while Tom was attending Chino High School where he got his first motorcycle which launched a lifetime of biking adventures. Following his graduation in 1973, he enlisted in the Army and served his time with the Military Police. It was working in a variety of restaurants where he found his culinary skills and a passion for cooking for which he was known for the rest of his life.

He met the love of his life, Sherrie (Reeves) Monaco, in 1984 and they were united in marriage in 1985. On September 7, 1988, they became the proud parents of Sean Richard Monaco. As a family they resided in Chino, California. In pursuing his life-long dream of owning his own restaurant, he opened Babe's Café which was named in the memory of his father. People were drawn to his restaurant not only for the amazing food, but to enjoy his well-known antics that provided entertainment and endless laughs. Whenever the opportunity arose, Tom and his wife enjoyed the open roads on their motorcycle with fellow motorcycle enthusiasts.

In 2009 they chose to move to Hoover, Alabama to be closer to their son. It was in Hoover where faith in Christ became an important part of their lives. He worked a variety of jobs but continued his passion for cooking which won over many new friends and wonderful neighbors. Tom and his wife got the opportunity to ride the amazing roads of Alabama while making new friends. He retired from Lowe's Home Improvement store in 2019 due to his illness.

Tom is survived by his wife, Sherrie, and son, Sean. He is also survived by his mother, Lydia Monaco, his sister, Annamaria DiGioia, his brother, Anthony (Laurie) Monaco, of Chino Hills, California, and his niece, Antoinette (Anthony) Franklin and great nieces (Briauna and Audrey) and nephew (Anthony), of Beavercreek, Ohio.

Tom is preceded in death by his father, Lawrence Monaco.

Memorial contributions may be directed towards the family to be used to honor Tom at a later date.
