Susan Ann Baker Wilhite Obituary

Aug 05, 1947 - Mar 29, 2017

This obituary is administered by:
Susan Ann Baker WilhiteAt the young age of 69, Susan passed away Wednesday March 29, 2017, with her daughter Callie by her side. A memorial celebration of Susan's life will be held on Saturday, April 8 at 2:00 p.m. at Broadmoor United Methodist Church, 3715 Youree Dr., Shreveport, LA. The Rev. Kathy Wafer of Lakeview United Methodist Church in Minden and Dr. Greg Davis of Broadmoor United Methodist Church will co-officiate the service. Susan was born on August 5, 1947 in Florence, South Carolina. A resident of Shreveport for the past 46 years, Susan attended the University of South Carolina and Northwestern School of Nursing where she earned her Registered Nursing degree in 1983. She worked as an Operating Room Nurse for over 20 years. She was a very skilled and highly respected R.N. who always put the needs and care of her patients first. We will never know the countless lives she touched in her years of nursing, but her compassionate nature certainly made a difference. For Susan, nursing was a ministry rather than a job. She saw her work as a way of serving God. In addition to nursing, Susan was committed to her community. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, a co-founder of The Kindred Guild (a support group for young women at Volunteers of America), a member of The Junior League of Shreveport, a member of The Northwest Louisiana Master Gardener's Association, a board member of the Arc of Caddo-Bossier, and was active in the Companions in Christ Prayer Group. While attending the University of South Carolina, she met and married Cozie Wilhite. In 1971, they moved to Shreveport where they raised three children and developed lifelong friendships with people of all ages. Sitting still was not part of Susan's repertoire, and being around her was an experience. Nothing gave her greater joy than being with family and friends at her camp on Lake Bistineau, infamously known to many as Camp Wilhagan. Invitations were not required, but if you went, you were sure to have fun singing, dancing, eating, drinking and listening to Susan's many Pearls of Wisdom (whether you wanted to listen or not)! She grabbed onto life, lived it to the fullest and was a force with which to be reckoned.Susan was preceded in death by her beloved grandmother, Minnie Dell Parrott ("Mimee"); her parents, Ann and John Ed Baker, Jr.; and her father-in-law, "Big" Cozie Wilhite. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Cozie; and their children, Andrew Raney Wilhite, Callie Wilhite Hamm and husband, William T. Hamm, Jeffrey Wynn Wilhite and wife, Frances Boogaerts Wilhite. Named by her first grandchild, Connor, Susan was called TuTu by her six grandchildren, Connor Wynn Hamm , Annie Tindol Hamm, Mollie Mabel Hamm, Cozie Jackson Wilhite, Magnolia Ruth Wilhite and William Townes Wilhite. She knew and adored all of her grandchildren, each of whom brought great joy to her life. She is also survived by her siblings, John Baker, III and wife, Vicky, Chris Baker and wife, Susie, and Laura Lee Powell and husband, Jeff; as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition, Susan will be greatly missed by her beloved mother-in-law, Mabel Grace Wilhite of Cherry Valley, Arkansas and her best friend of 45 years, Julia Hobby Gahagan who thanks her for all of the good times.Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Adams, Chip Burke, Connor Burke, Carl Feducia, John Howe, Josh Jackson, Marshall Jones, III, Stephen Roberts, Jr. and her Companions in Christ Prayer Group. We would like to offer special thanks to the devoted caregivers at Montclair Park who loved and cared for our precious Tutu. Without their love and tender mercies, this journey would have been unbearable. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Volunteers of America, 530 Kirby Place, Shreveport, LA 71101; Goldman School, 351 Jordan Street, Shreveport, LA 71101; or Heartlight Ministries, P.O. Box 480, Hallsville, TX 75650."I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." 2 Timothy 4:7.
