KINSTON | Sue Laroque Hardy Smith, 94, of Kinston, died Saturday, November 29, 2014, at her home. Sue had a great love for her family and enjoyed cooking and spending time with them. She graduated from Wheat Swamp High School where she played basketball and was the first person in Lenoir County to be inducted into the National Honor Society. After raising her two children, she attended East Carolina University where she obtained a degree in Elementary Education. She retired after serving 31 years as an educator at Contentnea Elementary School. She was a member of Woodington United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent and sang in the church choir for many years. She was an active member of Kinston Chapter, No. 53, Order of the Eastern Star. Being one of seven children, Sue was born on August 12, 1920, to Kirby Junious Hardy Sr. and Bessie Glenn Rouse Hardy of La Grange. Sue is survived by her daughter, Linda Smith Dawson and husband, Richard, of Kinston; daughter-in-law, Glenda Benson Smith, of Kinston; sister-in-law, Frances Hardy Edmundson; five grandchildren, Linda Sue Dawson Edmundson, and husband Bill, of Goldsboro, Jerry Herman Smith, III, of Kinston, Lisa Dawn Dawson McElwee, and husband Eugene, of Wilson, Kimberly Diane Dawson Kennedy, and husband, James, of Kinston, Stanley Glenn Smith of Goldsboro; five great-grandchildren, Jacquelyn Joi Edmundson of Knightdale; Jeromy Michael Allen, William Kyle Allen, Sarah Diane Kennedy and Christopher Glenn Smith, all of Kinston; one great-great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Sue was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Jerry Herman Smith Sr.; son, Jerry Herman Smith Jr; three sisters, Elsie Lee Hardy Gray, Annie Clemmie Hardy Penn and Betty Carnalia Hardy Sugg, all of Snow Hill; three brothers, Kirby Junious Hardy Jr. and James Bruce Hardy, both of Kinston, and William A. Hardy Sr. of Snow Hill. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 2, 2014, from noon to 1:30 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m. at Woodington United Methodist Church, 4265 U.S. 258 S., Kinston. An interment will follow at Pinelawn Memorial Gardens. A special thank you is extended to the caretakers that provided love and support for Sue during her extended illness: Christine Thomas, Sandra Turner and the staff at Asera Care. The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, 2900 Camelot Drive, Kinston. Flowers are welcome.
