Steven NieukirkWASHINGTON - Steven Robert Nieukirk, 72, of Washington passed away at 11:30 p.m. Sunday, December 11, 2016, surrounded by his loved ones.He was born on June 3, 1944, in Peoria, Illinois, to the late Jack A. and Mildred V. Samms Nieukirk Sr.Steven married Alice Marie Bergman, his high school sweetheart, at Saint Patrick's Catholic Church in Washington, IL, on November 4, 1967. They enjoyed 49 special years together.He is survived by his wife and daughters, Kimberly Eccles and Kelly (Jimmy) Hardesty. He was so proud of his grandchildren, Jesse Eccles, Jade Eccles, Casey Eccles, Max Eccles, and Tate Hardesty, all of Washington. Also surviving are his siblings, Jack (Gaye) Nieukirk of Chillicothe, Sandra Fisher, Connie (Chuck) Bradle and Randy (Scotti) Nieukirk, all of Washington; and many nieces and nephews.He graduated from Washington Community High School in 1962. He was a United States
Army veteran, serving in the Dominican Republic. A carpenter all of his life, Steve worked for DEL Construction Company and became head superintendent for H.J. Bergman Builders in Washington. He was a master craftsman and could build a home from the ground up.Steve was a member of the Carpenters Union Local 183 in East Peoria and American Legion Post 100 and
VFW Post 9016, both in Washington. Steve spent every morning playing euchre with his buddies and was delighted taking their quarters.Steve was a friend to all and always lived life to the fullest. He was the most hard-working, caring and loving husband, father and grandfather. Steve enjoyed vacationing with family and friends and never missed a sporting event of his grandchildren. Stevie was blessed to see his beloved Chicago Cubs win the World Series. Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday, December 16, 2016, at Mason-White Funeral Home in Washington.
