Stella C. Payton FlyVentura, CAStella C. Payton Fly passed away on February 2, 2017, in San Bernardino, California. She was born on August 21, 1917 in Fellows, California to Ernest Payton and Lela Graham Payton. She was the oldest of six daughters that included: Mary Lee, Retha, Betty Jean, Nadine, and Elaine. Stella met her husband W. Harvey Fly when he was working at Barr's Bakery in Ventura. She married him on May 28, 1938. In 1941, their first child Darlene was born, followed by Ronald in 1943, and Raymond in 1946. Stella's last home was on W. Warner Street where she lived from October 1953 unto December 2016. She loved Ventura very much. She worked at Ventura College cafeteria as a cook for 22 years. In her off hours she cooked for the Avenue Lions Club 1-2 times a month for 25 years. During the years of raising her children she was a den mother for her son's cub scout pack, an official scorekeeper for the little league teams that played at EP Foster School until her sons moved on to the Babe Ruth League. She also was the chauffer for her daughter to work at the Mayfair Theater from 1956-1958. Stella was a very active and dedicated member of the Cloverleaf Rebekah Lodge in Ventura for almost 50 years. She went through all of the offices within the lodge. She was a Past District President two different times. Her husband Harvey was also a District Deputy President of the Odd Fellows at the same time she went through her second term in 1976-77. Her sister Nadine and her husband James Lamanno were their marshals. In the late 1980s, Stella was given a Degree of Chivalry and Merit Award by the Odd Fellows in Ventura for her work with the little league, cub scouts, cooking many enchilada dinners, cooking breakfasts to raise funds for the Heart Fund-some of which were served in her home, as well as helping with the refreshments following many of the meetings, also for her service as District Deputy President twice, District Deputy Marshall four times, recording secretary for several years for her own lodge, and her work for the Lions Club. Stella enjoyed working in her yard. Her favorite flowers were roses and poinsettias. She also enjoyed embroidery, crocheting-making over 100 afghans over the years, as well as reading. Her favorite sport on television was baseball, followed by basketball. Stella was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Lela Payton; her sisters, Mary Lee, Retha, and Betty Jean. She was also preceded by her husband, Harvey in 1980. She is survived by her children, Darlene Ames of Eureka, Ronald Fly (Beverly) of San Bernardino, Raymond Fly (Helen) of Ventura; grandchildren, Robin (Wes) Collins, Robert Ochs, Cindy (Donny) Nystrom, Jeff ( Becky) Ochs, Tina (Todd) Simpson, and Bill (JoAnne) Fly; nine great-grandchildren; and ten great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Nadine Lamanno and Elaine Schell, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In addition, Stella had two "adopted" children that were friends of her children, Judy Carr and Gary (Anita) Hensley. A graveside service will be held on Friday, February 10, 2017, 11:00 a.m., at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, in Ventura.
