Our beloved, Sid Grande, entered into rest on February 1st, 2016. He was born on May 31st, 1927 to Sigurd and Irene Grande in Jamestown, North Dakota.Sid attended high school and college in North Dakota and received his B.S. from the University of Jamestown with a degree in business education and physical education. He was an active athlete, having participated in football, baseball, and wrestling, and went on to coach sports at both high school and college levels. He continued his studies in education at Colorado State University, earning his M.A. in physical education. In 1965, Sid left North Dakota and started working in Arizona for the Arizona Interscholastic Association. He accepted the position of Principal for Wickenburg High School in 1972. During this time, he received his Superintendent Certification from ASU. In 1976, he left to become the Superintendent of Antelope Union High School in Wellton, AZ, in Yuma County. Sid remained in this position for 20 years until his retirement.During his 20 years at Antelope High School, Sid overhauled the curriculum, built a new gym, started the Yuma County Teacher of the Year Program, served as the President of Small and Rural Schools Association, and was the leader of the B West Athletic Conference. He served as a member of the Arizona State Board of Education, President of AIA, and was honored by North Central Accreditation for his work. He was a founding member of The Educational Foundation of Yuma County. He served on numerous boards and national committees, and was also inducted into many Halls of Fame for his educational and athletic contributions. Sid greatly impacted the district, the town and the county, leaving a legacy that included several administrators and educators around the state.Sid was a member of the Lions Club,
Elks Club, and Wellton Mohawk Valley Kiwanis. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and
VFW, having served in the
U.S. Navy. Sid leaves behind his loving wife of 52 years, Irene, son David (Vicki), daughter Susanne Merck, son Donald (Betty), daughter Sara (Scott) Thorlin, and 10 grandchildren. He was a wonderful husband, father and friend, and will be dearly missed. Public viewing will be held at 10:00am with service to follow at 10:30am on Saturday, February 6th at Yuma Mortuary.
