After serving, he married Alice Urban Magaña in 1946. Servando worked for the U.S. Post Office for 34 years before retiring. He was a very prominent citizen of Somerton and formed the first volunteer fire department, he was the Sunday School Superintendent, he was the deacon and trustee for the First Baptist Church, he managed the Boys Little League baseball teams that became champions, Coach of many men's championship basketball and softball teams, he was Commander of the American Legion Post 47, a city councilman and Mayor of Somerton for four terms. However, Servando's biggest accomplishment was that he was a huge success with his whole family.Servando's great wit never left him, even as he was very sick and weak just before he left the hospital to come to his final resting place. The nurse thought Servando was out of it and asked him if he knew why he was in the hospital, Servando answered, "I am here to write a story on you and the hospital," the nurse was speechless, but the whole family broke out laughing, that was a classic response from Herman Servando Magaña. Servando is survived by his wife of 68 years, Alice Magaña; sons, Steven W. Magaña (Robyn) and Stanley D. Magaña (Jeanne); daughter, Katherine Magaña; 7 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren. Burial will follow at Desert Lawn Memorial Park, 1415 S. 1st Avenue, Yuma. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Servando's name to Hospice of Yuma.
