1939 – 2016
Mr. Roy Allan Nystrom (Lundmark), age 77 years, passed away peacefully in Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre on Thursday, December 1, 2016.Allan was born on August 22, 1939 in Dryden, Ontario. He was predeceased by his parents, Roy and Phyllis Lundmark, and step-father Bert Nystrom. Allan's childhood years were spent growing up in Wabigoon, Ontario, surrounded by family and friends. His family moved to Fort William in 1949. Allan attended Kingsway Public School and Selkirk High School, where everyone wanted him on their football team.He began his work life in the late 1950's with the Ontario Department of Highways and was part of the crews that constructed Highway 17, between Nipigon and Sault Ste. Marie. Allan's career changed in the mid-1960's when he joined the Canadian National Railway Police, as a constable. He was a member of the CNR Police until 1975 when he accepted a job at the MacMillan-Bloedel manufacturing plant in Rosslyn. Allan remained at “Mac-Blo” until his retirement. Allan was very fond of his many, many friendships developed during his working days.It was in late 1962 when Allan met his lifelong love, Joyce (nee Taylor). Allan and Joyce celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary on March 16, 2016. Almost exclusively, Allan and Joyce lived in the Lakehead, including 10 years on Oliver Road in Murillo.Allan was active in the Murillo community as a neighbour, friend, volunteer firefighter, and member of the Murillo Fall Fair association, where he served two years as president. He was always involved with his children's sports activities by coaching baseball, hockey and ringette. In 1983, they moved back to Thunder Bay. Allan's many established friendships continued, and new ones were made on Holly Crescent. He loved the outdoors, regardless of the time of year, temperature or location. Many hours, days and months were spent in Ignace, Ontario enjoying fishing, hunting, blueberries, socializing, and relaxing at Gummeson's Camp, where he was fondly known as “Big Al.” He especially enjoyed the daily gatherings at the fish house, with his life-long, childhood pal Larry Gummeson, reminiscing and sharing stories with all who gathered. Everyone looked forward to these moments. Big Al developed and maintained many deep and meaningful friendships there.Hockey was a focus for Allan in the winter and he and Joyce became and remain, season ticket holders for the Lakehead University Thunderwolves.Above everything, Allan's family was his priority. He loved them all. He was very proud of all his children's accomplishments and was committed to, and succeeded at being the best “papa” to his grandchildren. He was the gentle giant who was best known for his wonderful bear hugs and as an honourable and trustworthy man, who could be depended on by all that knew him.Allan is survived by his wife Joyce; his children Cheryl (Dave) Nystrom-Ryckman, Murray (Shelagh) and Hope (Larry) Kempe; his grandchildren Danyelle and Alex Kempe, Erik and Hanna Nystrom. He is also survived by his brother Ron (Lorna) and sister Karen (Michael); sister-in-law Janet Taylor along with many cousins, nephews, nieces, aunts and uncles. Many thanks to those who have sent their condolences, cards of support, gifts and well wishes. The family would like to give a special and heartfelt thank you to cousin Bruce Hewitson for his daily hospital visits to Allan and support to Joyce. As per Allan's wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family interment will be held at a later date. Should friends so desire, donations can be made to two of Allan's favourite charities: The Boys & Girls Club of Thunder Bay; the Thunder Bay and District Humane Society or to a charity of your choice.Arrangements have been entrusted to the Westfort Chapel, 420 West Gore Street at James Street.
