Roderick I. Kelly, 49, died on Sunday, April 19, 2009 in Winterhaven, California. He was born on October 12, 1959 at the Fort Yuma Indian Hospital on the Quechan Reservation. He was a member of the Quechan tribe. He worked for River Rock and Sand Inc. and Sleepy Hollow RV Park as a landscaper. As a youth he attended the Quechan Assembly of God Church where his uncle Jacob Escalanti preached. He attended San Pasqual School in Winterhaven and attended S.I.P.I. in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Roderick's hobbies included art, Indian bead work, and reading. He loved spending time at the Quechan Paradise Casino, the movies, and the library. He could also be found spending time working in the yard or taking long walks with his dogs. Roderick was quiet and a loving person. He was a good father who loved and cared about his children. Roderick is survived by his parents, Gilbert Kelly and Pearl Escalanti; his sisters, Donna Herrera, Rosalinda Dewey, and Marilyn Dewey; a son, Julian Kelly; a daughter, Ivanna Kelly; one granddaughter, Xipharah Kelly; nieces, Amy Clarise Paddock, Veronica Ruiz, Alberta Millard, and Christina Solorio Jackson; uncles, Jacob Escalanti and David Escalanti of Sells, Arizona; aunts, Viola Escalanti, Esther Standifier both of Tucson, Arizona, Carol Escalanti of Baltimore, Maryland, and Shirley Kelly Nopah of Fort Yuma Quechan Reservation; and many numerous cousins, great nieces, and great nephews. Roderick was preceded in death by his son, Valerian Kelly; daughter, Metena Kelly; brother, Gerald Ira Dewey; nephew, Joseph Edward Herrera; paternal grandparents, John Kelly Sr. and Theresa Kelly; maternal grandparents, Benjamin Escalanti and Elizabeth Carr; uncles, Ernest Cachora Sr., Austin Escalanti, Edwin Kelly, John Kelly Jr., Eugene Kelly, and Stanley Warner; and aunts, Inez Cooper, Helen Pasqual, and Joanne Kelly. Pallbearers will be Jeffery Cachora, Keith Cachora, Jerrell Brown, Augustine Herrera, Dana Miller, Steven Saunderson, and Vince Tiger. Honorary pallbearers are Gilbert Kelly, Julian Kelly, Jacob Escalanti, David Escalanti, Glenn Escalanti, Elston Escalanti, Roland Escalanti, Keeny Escalanti, Quetin Escalanti, Damon Polk, Philbrick Emerson, Cristoble Emerson, Arlie Emerson, Robert Emerson, B.J. William Murrietta, Wallace Dugan Jr., Kerby Dugan, Benjamin Miguel, Melvin Miguel, Merril Kelly, Weldon Brown, Larry Hammond, Russell and Timothy Pasqual, Jonathan and Travis Pasqual, Dustin Jackson, Alden Cachora, John Norton, Milton and Preston Jefferson, and Albert Solorio Jr. Church service will be at Funeraria del Angel (formerly Kammann Mortuary) on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at 3 p.m. Tribal Ceremonial Rites will begin at 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 25 at the Quechan Big House. Cremation will be at 5 a.m. on Sunday, April 26, 2009
