Robert Edwin Ball, Jr., M.D.A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, May 9, 2017, at St. Rita Catholic Church with Rev. Craig Scott officiating. Interment followed in Greenwood Memorial Park under the direction of John Kramer & Son Funeral Home. Visitation was from 1:00 P.M. until time of service on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at the St. Rita Catholic Church.Dr. Robert Edwin Ball, Jr. was born on June 14, 1928. He passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving wife and family on Sunday, May 7, 2017. Dr. Robert Edwin Ball, Jr. was preceded in death by his parents, Francis Jones Ball and Robert Edwin Ball, Sr. and his sister, Dixie Lee Ball Adams and husband Bill. Dr. Ball was a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Allergy and Immunology. After graduation from the Louisiana State University Medical School in New Orleans, LA, and completion of a general rotating internship, he then trained in Internal Medicine for three years in the Harvard Teaching Hospitals in Boston, Massachusetts. He received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant Commander in 1963 and entered the private practice of Internal Medicine. In 1973, he accepted a two year fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at the University of Colorado and National Jewish Hospital and Research Center in Denver, Colorado. In the course of two separate practices he served in various capacities at the local hospitals, such as Staff President at Cabrini, Executive Committee at Rapides Regional, Chairman of Medicine of Infectious Diseases at both hospitals as well as other committee appointments. He served as President of the LA. Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Society, the LA Senior Golf Association and the Alexandria Golf and Country Club. He was a Fellow and, or member of numerous organizations including the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, the American College of Physicians, New York Academy of Science, American Thoracic Society, American Association of Certified Allergists, LA State Medical Society, AMA, and Rapides Parish Medical Society. He is listed in the Marquis of Who's Who of Medical Specialists and the American Board of Compendium of Certified Medical Specialists. A few of the awards received was the Undergraduate Society of Medical Sciences for outstanding member, a United States Public Health Service Fellowship for Gynecologic Research, and the award given for Excellence in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Ed Ball was survived by his devoted wife, Hilda Gene Rush Ball of 69 years; two daughters, Susan Ball Slocum and Nancy Ball Flournoy (George "Bubba" Flournoy); four grand-daughters, Beth Ponder, Allison Ferrell, Katie Finley and Amy Cross; and, 10 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers honored to serve were Joe Hunt, Andrew Ponder, Norm Olson, Samuel Adams, Jason Rush, Johnny Allphin, Kermit Smith and David Hussey. Honorary pallbearers were Harry Silver, Gene Cotton, Walter Hunter, Scotty Brame, Dr. Bruce Barton, Dr. Robert Freedman, Dr. Ed Villemez, Fred Tarver, Tolly Bordeaux, Allen Crips, Greg O'Quinn and Gaurev Singla. The Family expresses their sincere thanks to Dr. Bruce Barton, Dr. Robin Freedman and St. Joseph's Hospice for their tender care.
