Richard L. StoneLaurel-Richard L. Stone (Dick) left this earth to enter a much better place on June 20, 2017. He was born on July 4, 1921 in Sharon, WV to Elmer Elsworth and Odessa Blizzard Stone. He was in the United States Navy during WWII and served on the USS New Jersey as a Radioman 3/CO. He was Sussex County's Democrat Chairman for four years and elected mayor of Laurel, DE three different times. He received the Alexis I. DuPont Bayard award for Delaware Democrat of the year two times. He taught welding at Sussex Vo-Tech in Georgetown, DE for 22 years. He has 75 years of marriage to Juanita Powell Stone and helped raise six children, Sandra Lea McWhirter, Gregory Powell Stone (Mo), Stephen Albert Stone (Brenda), Bonnie Elaine Fischer (Jim), Ellen Drake Hearn (Ricky) and Richard Lee Stone II (Cindi).A Funeral Service will be held at the Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home 700 West St. Laurel, DE on Saturday, June 24, 2017 at 12:00 pm, where a viewing will also be held from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm. The Rev. Tim Dukes will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Laurel.
