RACINE - Richard L. 'Dick' Garber, 87, passed away on Tuesday December 27, 2011. Dick was born on October 8, 1924, the son of the late William Earl and Hazel Lenore (nee: Gantenbein) Garber in Trempealeau. He was united in marriage to Marcia J. Due in Racine on August 11, 1951, who preceded him in death on May 22, 2003. Dick received his electrical Engineering Degree from University of Wisconsin. While attending college he enjoyed playing cornet with the University Wisconsin Marching Band. Dick served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church, serving in many capacities through the years. Dick retired from Wisconsin Electric Power Company, where he was a Lighting Engineer for 41 years. He had been a member and was the National Membership Chairman for the Illuminating Engineering Society. Dick was known as an avid Birder and was a past president of the Hoy Nature Society. Dick and his wife Marcia enjoyed spending time together, birding, gardening and especially traveling which included several cruises, Elderhostel Trips and trips to foreign countries. Dick is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Richard Strash of Pleasant Prairie; son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Kim Garber of Lodi; four grandchildren, Robert, Carolyn, and Allison Strash and Bryan (Jessica) Morel; and two great granddaughters, Dylin and Amy Morel. He is further survived by one brother, Robert Earl Garber of Prescott, also several cousins, other relatives and dear friends. Dick was preceded in death by oldest brother, Donald and sister-in-law, Lorraine Garber. . Funeral service will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, 3825 Erie St. at 11:30 a.m. Thursday December 29, 2011. Visitation will be held at church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until service time. Dick will be laid to rest at Graceland cemetery following services. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to remember Dick in a special way may direct memorials to Dick's favorite charity, Maya Works or toTrinity United Methodist Church.
